MG53 bolt with mg3 cocking handle

Post by sokerivatsa »

The cocking handle is too short, so the bolt gets flying past it when I try to cock it. Would a MG3 bolt solve the problem? Would it work in a MG53?

Bolts are the same dimensions for the M53, MG42, and MG3, with the exception that the extractor assembly and feed roller are different for the MG3 bolt.

The cocking handles are the same too. If the MG3 cocking handle starts to pull the bolt back then slips off (under) the bolt, either the tab which sticks out at the front end of the cocking handle bar could be raised up a bit so that it doesn't do that and catches on the bolt better, or the bolt tab that the cocking handle catches on is too short. That could be built up with weld and reshaped. I think it would be easier to reshape the cocking bar.
I doubt that the cocking handle bar would take being bent upward when it is cold without cracking, it may require being heated to bend it up a bit.

Maybe you would be able to see exactly what is happening if you take the grip off and watch through the ejection port and grip hole while you try to cock it. If you do, confirm to us exactly what's going on. Better description of the symptoms = better diagnosis and cure.
