I was considering swapping out my mg1 top cover for an MG3 topcover...I know they're both .308 but the MG3 has the nifty hold open device and feed lever spring. (I have a reliable bolt hold open device)
My problem is this: because I use the gun almost exclusively for reenacting, I can't use the MG3 feed tray because of its VERY obvious shape. Does anyone know for certain if the MG3 top cover will work with the mg1 feed tray?
Thanks

Re: mg3 top cover on mg1 feed tray
I just checked. I thought for sure they'd work together, but mine won't.
I tried installing an MG1 FT with my MG3 cover and I can't get the pin in all the way no matter how I orintate it. Its like there is a slight difference making the two not fit quite right (I know there is a flat on the pin and cover hole BTW). I didn't want to force it and maybe bend something. I fiddled with it for about 15 minutes before I gave up.
Seems real close though. Then I tried the MG1 cover and MG1 FT and it fit like a glove (like I knew it would), then the MG3 cover and MG3 FT again and of course no problem. Then I went back to the MG3 cover with the MG1 FT thinking I just had something out of whack and still no dice. So I then tried it with the MG3 cover and MG1 FT by themselves, outside the gun...still can't get the pin all the way in.
I never bothered trying combining them before because I just run one or the other or the 8mm setup.
