MG34 water-cooled shroud

Post by anjongni »

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewIt ... =334626273I've never heard of this, and don't remember seeing one in Folke's book. Is this the only one extant, or do any of you fellows have one? Wondered how common they are. And what would the receiver look like to interface with the threaded shroud? I don't know anything about water-coolerd mg's, but it would need a barrel with water-sealing surfaces, right? (Maybe it uses the BREN barrel next to it!)...Phil

Fantasy item, probably converted from the Eastern bloc MG15 water jackets.

Well, '42R, you have a w/c MG15, right? Is this shoud identical except for the "fur MG34" wording? Does your shroud have any inscription on the back?...Phil

I think that Folke's statement above is right. I'll try to get to mine and check it out later tonight.

I had an MG15 and a couple watercooled kits. The rear of the jacket pictured looks exactly like the MG15 kits I have. The inside of the rear of that jacket is threaded just like the MG15 jackets. On the other hand the MG34 has no threads on its receiver and does not use that mounting method. I agree with Folke on this one.....how would it be possible to mount the MG34 to the jacket? It would have to include the front end of the receiver somehow and also as noted would require some sort of barrel with sealing surfaces. While you could probably make up some sort of mount that could screw into the jacket and then adapt the 34 receiver it would put the barrel so far out of the jacket that watercooling it would make no sense. Also considering the means of operation on the 34 it wouldn't make sense to use an extension on the receiver. I think the thing is pure bunk. The MG15 barrel change is not set up to be done in less than a minute so watercooling that gun does make sense. With the MG34 you can swap out the barrel in seconds so why watercool. It doesn't pass the smell test and is likely crap. Anyone can make up stamps to put whatever they want on a part. It doesn't make it real though.
