I think the 08 Sled is the nicest, but that 1910 sokolov mount is pretty practical.

Interesting, the Sokolov mount with some sort of adaptor to fit an 08 is the most immediately interesting, or the big old MG99 or so sled! Pretty cool stuff! Wonder if we could get a good view of what the adaptor is, and make it?

The wheeled mount is not a Sokolov, but is a Vickers "J" tripod, altered with the addition of wheels al la Sokolov and a shield bracket as was used on the US made Russian contract Vickers guns. The Russian 1910 Maxim on that mount has a later style rear sight without the windage adjustment and an MG08 blank firing adaptor.

Those were the issue sled mounts of the day for that Maxim. None of either gun or mount are in the US, unfortunately.....

An update on the sleds in the pic above. The one with the wheels is a production mount, not a hybrid made up of various other mount parts. I read my post and that was not clear at all.....

I wonder at what point we will get to when it pays off for a place like IMA to contract with a metal-fab company to punch out German repro sled mounts (maybe when they go from the current $4k/$6k up to $8/$9k.

Obviously corners would have to be cut here and there, but the above looks simplistic enough to clone; then again my knowledge base is limited on these

Repop MG08 sleds would be nice to see on the market, but would be a costly investment to attempt for a pretty limited market. This is assuming that they are done with an accurate eye to reproducing original detail along with correct weight and types of materials. Certainly can be done, and IMA has some well established shops making their repro parts, but making it profitable might be difficult wihtout high retial cost.
The sleds are constructed of mostly stamped parts for the major components and many minor parts, and then cast steel and machined parts, plus wood inserts, so it is a daunting project. I would love to see some MG1 sleds made.....

How much ammo was in the basic load on one of these?

The barrel jacket covered MG08 is not on a sled and is the subject of identification on other forums but as to repro sleds they are already out there. I will ask one owner to join MG42 and he can tell us all about it. Also last year a Japanese company measured in detail a Brussels museum sled in order to re-produce them. I do not know the status but given time I am sure we will all know, again I will find out the detail.
As to the MG08 carriage, in France there are some very knowledgable collectors who are lucky enough to own these items so they do exist. There are drawings of loading specs etc so how detailed is your request on info georgthomas?

Imblitzvt, your picture is a capture Russian's MG on a german sledmount; and for georgthomas, the MG on your picture is a german naval MG with the naval tripod. The soldiers are from sea bataillon....

There are some interesting things, but i think it's a rebuild MG.
