Unique MG-42 flash hider

Post by gska3873 »

Going through some of my kits and one of them had this flash hider shown below. From a little research on here this afternoon it looks like it is for an early MG-42 or what someone on here called an MG-39/41??? Would this also be correct to go with the slab side charging handle? What other unique parts would be correct for a build using this one as the basis for the genre of a build? Also, any idea as to the approximate value of one of these flash hiders if it is an item of more rarity than others (it is not for sale by the way)? Thank You....on with the pics!

I can only find one picture in volume 1 of Folke Myrvang outstanding work on the MG34 and MG 42 On page 128 there is a "propaganda photo" of an MG42 Gunner in the prone position with a partial caption of "MG42 shows a gun fitted with what appears to be an early and slightly different flash-hider".
I have no idea how long they were fielded or how rare they are. Maybe someone else can answer that.

Its rare and I have only seen a couple of them. I have one and I put it on a 1942 gun with the slab sided cocking handle as I felt that was the right place for it. It was on a gun that I bought in England years ago that came out of Yugoslavia. Its worth whatever someone is willing to pay you for it. I would guess that only a few collectors would have any interest in it, but its a nice and genuine early MG42 part.

Beware of fakes on the slab sided cocking handles, though!

Thanks for the heads up. Whats the best way to tell the slab side fakes from the original?

95% are fake. I have pics of one from a Steyr gun and a Maget gun if you find one to compare with.

Certainly it can be sold for over $200. How much more would change with the wind, but $200 would be likely be the bottom price. It is a rare item, but not impossible to find. In the last 3 years I think I've seen 1 a year offered, mostly in Europe.
Latvia and immediately surrounding areas are the source for these very early style parts. It's the original testing grounds for the MG42.
