Blueing

Post by rgus48 »

I have an original MG-42 at a class 2 manufacturer. He is repairing the original receiver and converting it to a Semi Auto. He will be able to do everything except the bluing. He has offered several coatings but I would like to return it to the correct blue. Can anyone recommend a place I will be able to send it ?

Something different than blue will likely be better cosmetically. The welds may/may not match the color blue that the remainder of the gun come out as. It's possible you'll end up with a few tiger stripes.

I plan to parkerize and paint with duracoat "blue".
"good , bad, .....I'm the man with the gun."

Its amazing anything works right around here with a bunch of
over-age juvenile delinquents running the place.

I went the dura-coat way, as the veterans of this site know, if applied correctly, on a properly de-greased surface, even using their special little spray cans, it will go on well, wear hard, and not look too bad. It will endure more than bluing will and you will not have to cringe when salty hands grab it or the occasional beer/mud/rain etc., ends up coming into contact with the surface.

HOWEVER,,,,,,NOTHING looks as rich as blue (even w/ some tigerstripes  ), if I were to do it over, I would consider cutting out a PVC pipe (making a dunk tank) and plying my rust-bluing skills, worst case scenario you just dura-coat over it

Either way, if you go the dura-coat method, just hang/suspend the parts at whatever horizontal level you work at, b/c if you go with the special spray packs they do not do well at all if your angel up or down gets too severe, they are not as versatile as a sprayer and compressor, but otherwise are satisfactory.

That is nice work so far, I am glad someone is still doing this for those that cannot weld :D
