Which is better to have on your MG42 machine gun a wood or bakelite buttstock far as cracking and damage over time during operation of the weapon?

Wood lasts longer and are more accurate for later war manufactured weapons.

I don't believe that it is the operation of the weapon that causes problems, ok tens of thousands of rounds might cause problems. Field use and "war time use" caused most of the problems. As far as in the field shooting I'm going with wood. As far as display I like the bakelite stock for show and tell. Could go either way if you have a real nice redone wood stock for display.
Used wood stock for general shooting for me, if you get small dents due to carry and transport small problems.

Something to think about.

I'm looking to replace my original German MG42 buttstock as I don't want to damage it when it's being shot but I 've been told a Yugo won't fit so what options do I have?

Yugo stocks fit fine. I don't know who told you this. Use Yugo or repopped wood - you'll be fine

Is that with a German buffer?

Yugo or German should fit but there are exceptions to all manufacturers.

What type of exceptions are you referring to?

Just buy an mg3 buffer and bakelite stock. The yugo stocks look like an elephant's foot they suck.

any buffer should fit any reciever.
buffer & stock combos fit along production lines german to german - yugo to yugo.
A mismatched combo will fit togther poorly but should work for short term, testing, or a hoard of zombies emergency

It was I who told him the Yugo stock would not fit, because I assumed he was also using a Yugo buffer. If he is just looking for the wood, Yugo would fit onto a German buffer. If anyone has what he is looking for, please help him out.
