Markings on Imperial German ammo cans...

Post by dwmmg08 »

Anyone other than me like to collect these things? :D

I have a variety of WWI and WWII German ammo cans, from the Double cans, to the Patronenkasten 15 type ammo cans. Over the years, I've found markings on Imperial cans on Lids in the center where the handle is, on the sides, and now under the latch. On weimar cans, I've found markings on the sides, and now on the raised part between the handle and the latch on the lid. On Nazi era cans, they all seem to be marked on the center of the lid, under the handle.

My latest can is a Patronenkasten 15 type, with markings of a tiny "H.r." on the lid, under the latch. Anyone have any idea what maker this would have been?

Also, on the double ammo cans, I often have a hard time finding makers marks on those. Anyone else have any experience with those?

Last, does anyone know if the PK 15 type ammo cans were marked in WWI with an arrow like the double ammo cans?

Hallo dwmmg08,

i owen also a chest with the Marking H.r.
its a chest who contains oil and petroleum cans and a soaking can with booster,
The soaking can is lokated in the middle, the lid of soaking can is fixed in the bulge in the middle of the lid.
Size like the double-Belt chest.
Its alo a crown and the Marking AWD (Artillerie Werkstätten Dreden).
I dont know what means H.r. may be not a Maker....

Wow, good reply Alpenkorps!

My H.r. marked PK 15 can actually has something over the top of the Hr, that now appears to be the base of the crown you have on your can. I thought it looked like a crown before, but it's indistinct. Now looking at yours, it's the same, it's the base of the crown. But now what does that mean I wonder? I'm going to have to look hard for more markings on it, and on some others Iv'e got.

Interesting on the AWD marking, are the AWS markings for another artillery workshop? My MG08 sled has that.

Thanks! Glen :photos:

hi Glenn,

Sory there is a mistake in my Thread before,
the Marking AWD means Artillery Workshop Danzig,
Artillery Workshop Dresden is written : AWDr.
your Sled is marked AWS, means " Artillerie Werkstätten Spandau"
the most sleds are build in Spandau, my both Sleds also (one made in 1913, one in 1917).

There are Artillery Workshops in : Spandau, Deutz, Danzig, Straßburg , Dresden, Muenchen
Enclosed please find pics of another Markings on my Chest's.

alpenkorps, excellent info again! and good pictures! I am going to have to clean off a water can I got recently now... wow, Bing!!! that's excellent!

I have one with the markings s and a number on the end of the can, just like what you have there; I thought that it was probably weimar, but couldn't point toward any particular reason.

I'll try to post some pics of my cans just so you can see.... but I have some more digging to do to find all the marks on them!

Hi Glenn,

Württ. Metall. Fabr. means
Wuerttmbergische Metallwaren Fabrik 1917 shortage WMF,
a firm who produce metal items.
still exist up to today, very popular and not cheap items, mess kits, spoons, forks knifes and and other coocking items.

The Crown with SL is unknown at the moment, will try to find out.
