8mm feed pawl problem!

Let's just say wright up front glad the site is back up and running!!!
Does anyone one have a pic of the MG top cover, working parts side?
My feed pawl is missing a spring, and when I put the feed tray cover on it hangs up.
What holds the feed pawl in place?
Looks like a C-clip held it on or something else?
Few rough spots on the parts. When the spring or that part came off it bounced around/slammed into all the other parts.Cycles once or twice before it hangs up/locks up!!

there are pictures in the top cover stickie
the fed pawls are held in place by the center link and depressor plate spring, even though it looks like it was designed to be held by an c-clip it doesn't use one.

use the stickie to make sure you have 8MM parts, like not a 308 center link or feed pawls.

contact Dangola for the missing spring.

It looks 8mm! If you lay the top cover over as to put it on, the feed pawl drops down and hangs up. That center stud that the feed pawl centers around looks like the picture, but as soon as you flip it over it drops and hangs! Am I just not getting this or is something wrong with this set up? That stud looks like it's been center punched a few times.

post a pic of your cover assembled. Is the spring for the pressure base present? I can imagine the feed pawl dropping if this was missing.

Yes,the spring is there. One spring under the center feed pawl is missing. I don't know if that caused the problem. When I get the wright equipment to post pics I'll do so. Old computer.Any other suggestions?

Yes! A straight on shot of that "stud" in the middle of the feed pawl. Mine looks like top part of stub is sheared off or something. Center has a big center punch mark/hole. Top cover has a date "29XI1943". So I don't know what, who, where, when, and back to the who has been a hold of it. I would really hate to attach the top cover and start running it and GOD knows what would happen. I think it would really HURT!

A few pic of one of my top covers 8mm.
The stud/rivet for feed pawl has been hit/center punched a few to many times.
Any help?

The only thing holding the pawls in is the spring under the depressor plate. The guide pin you have pictures of just keeps it from flopping side to side. Yours looks a little beat, but it's not missing anything.

Here is my M53 pin.


Here is my MG3 cover pin. Better condition, and uses a different staking method, but essentially the same.



The depressor flipped up, showing the spring and pivot pin. If your pivot is worn, it may allow the pawl assembly to flop around a bit. My M53 is sloppy, the MG3 is pretty tight.

It's an 8 year old "point and push the button" digital Kodak DX4330.

Good close ups are mostly about bright lighting and a steady hand.
Take a dozen pictures from different angles and distances, then crop and post the one that turned out.
Fuzzy tech photos annoy me. It's not bigfoot in a UFO. Take the time to get a good shot.

OK, I took this to the next step tonight. As I mentioned, my pawl was a bit sloppy, bit moved fine and didn't hang up. Pushing up on it, as it would move being upside-down, it comes very close to slipping off the guide pin.



Replacing it with an MG3 feed pawl I got from robertrtg a while back. He has 2 styles, older, and newer that works with linked belts. This is the older style. The box label says made by Rheinmetal in July 1959. It is also labeled MG42, not MG3 or even MG1. I guess they didn't bother to change their label stamper by then.

Much less slop, and doesn't move up close to the top of the pin. So I guess the much of the wear is in the pawls themselves, and not so much in the cover pin. Still not as good as the newer cover, but much better.
