building my dummy mg42
Ok, i have welded a steel block between the rails to prevent the bolt form operating. Do I need to do anything with the fa grip or can I just attach it?

Good question. Dunno. Even asking a class III dealer/Mfr might not get you an answer if he hasn't done the same thing in the past.
A GUESS would be that welding the block tot he rails is enough. But I can't say anything about this for sure.

The dummy gun I bought had the FA grip with all internals. It didn't matter because there was nothing for it to operate, and couldn't do anything. If you attach a FA grip to your receiver and are building an operating gun it would be a different matter, there could be an arguement for an intent to build a FA.You are just attaching to an inert piece of steel, you could attach it to your bicycle and it would not make it into a machine gun! ---bil

Good point Bil - the piece JD is building is NOT a firearm. The FA gripstick is not enough to make it one. This sounds logical and reasonable, though maybe JD could still remove several of the parts in the gripstick and still have the spring and trigger action work normally. That might be a little additional insurance.
What might be a concern would be if he were to later build a semi '42 and still have the FA grip in the dummy. It is a long shot speculation, but I recall that posession of the parts (thought not assembled) is still, by law, posession of a firearm. The kits that some on this site own do not fall into that catagory because the receiver has been destroyed by cutting. The parts in their posession are an assortment that, as a whole, do not and cannot be easily assembled into a FA weapon. You want to be sure that AT NO TIME you ever have such a collection of parts where that can be done.
Take this as a loose "rule of thumb" and do not quote it in any legal matter, as it does not come from a lawyer or any direct legal document.
