How do you guys clean off cosmoline?

Post by ChrisPCook »

I have tried several different methods, but actually want to hear what other people are doing rather than rambling about my methods. So, how do you clean all the goo off your parts kits, cmp rifles, etc? Chris....

I have used industrial degreaser mix 50/50 with water cuts right through it, then clear the water with an air hose.

Gasoline bath followed by mineral spirits, then oil. Gas eats cosmo for lunch. An alternate is boiling water. It has to be piping hot boiling, and it dissolves cosmoline pretty well.

I have used Gasoline before with good results, but had bad luck using mineral spirits on one occasion. Also have heard about the boiling water, but haven't tried it.

On stocks I stick them in the oven at around 175 with plenty of foil down to keep out of trouble w/ the boss, it works like a charm, I have also heard of people who put stocks in black plastic bags, stick 'em on the dash on a hot day, and let the heat do it's work, unfortunately I live in Alaska, so that trick is out....

I have heard that the dishwasher method works real well at raising small dents on the wood, but it has the same effects on cartouches on the stock (sometimes completely eliminating them), has anyone else had this problem w/ the dishwasher method? Chris...

I don't put the wooden parts in the dishwasher, you are right,it would damage any markings you have. For raisind dents,a damp sponge left on the dent will do.I just clean the metal parts in the dishwasher. ---bil

Dishwasher works great on your average beater stock. Makes it look like new. Just dont use the heat cycle. Let it air dry.

I wouldn't do it to a collector grade stock. In fact, I wouldn't even put mineral spirits on a collector grade stock. Just heat and wipe. and repeat.

I heard you could put tape on any cartouches while in the dishwasher. Have not tried that. I have only had 2 I have had to do the dishwasher trick on.

For the last ten years I have used mineral spirits mixed with Ford ATF. I have an old bluing tank with a pump in which I mix 3 gallons of mineral spirits and one quart of ATF.
Melts cosmo great on a 12 hr soak, runs right off. Use good gloves, it will melt latex or nytril. Heat guns work great on wood, but watch how close you get the gun to the wood.

I use citric degreaser from auto parts store. it mixes with water and makes boo cous of liquid, i think like 4 gallons or so. is works extreemly well and you wash the parts off with hose water when your done. I keep the stuff in plastic milk jugs. it has lasted me through 6 builds so far. if you notice fizzing you need to fish out the part with aluminum in it as it is eating it up.

I use a heat gun that I purchased from Grainger to get most of the cosmoline off. I hang the parts on a clothes hanger and put pieces of newspaper on the ground for the run off. Works great and is very, very fast. I follow up with a rinse down in mineral spirits and follow up with a coat of CLP.
