Chinese Type 24 Maxim finally home

I finally got to bring the Chinese Type 24 Maxim home and here are some pics after having some work done to put the gun back to its AA configuration and a fresh coat of paint on the waterjacket. I will be test firing this Saturday in both calibers, 7.62X54R and 8MM.

Wow...Where on earth did you get a Chinese Maxim from...and please dont say China. I recently bought the top cover from a Chinese Maxim, but thats all I could find.

I bought it from an East Coast dealer/mfg. I need to work out some problems with him before I state who I bought it from (reference the feedblock post a couple down from this one). I guess there were only 24 parts sets brought it in the 1980's for these and 4 true C&R guns. Some mfg's built the Chinese Maxims up from C&R MG08 sideplates (which was approved by the BATFE). I was going to test fire it after a subgun match tomorrow but with it being 113 degrees tomorrow I'll think I'll wait. I'll try to video it for imblitzvt as well. Here is a pic of the fusee cover plate. I am going to try to get it repainted to original with the swatiska a deep red and the area around the chinese characters black.

Well, I couldn't stand it so after the subgun match I took it out to test fire. It ran pretty good with the 54R steel belts. Had some problems with the cocking handle not coming all the way back and locking up. The 8MM had light strikes on the primers so I think I need to headspace the lock. Will need to contact Bob or Dolf on how to do this. Plus I was using 50's Yugo which is finicky. All in all it was fun and I went through 250 rounds of 54R pretty quick while getting it sighted in. I have a short video but I don't know how to post it.

What kind of 8mm lock do you have? Chinese/German style? Is it an adj lock? If so all you need to do is change our the shims at the "arm". I know thats probably easier said then done.

It was fun, but boy was it HOT. The lock is specific to the Type 24, in 8MM. It is headspaceable like the Russian locks. (Just have to learn how to do it!)

As long as its not so hot that it burns your hands to touch the gun... count me in!

Ok, I have not done it but do know how its done. To headspace you will need to add/remove shims from your "crank arm" were it connects to your lock. Remove your lock... look at the arm it connected too. See how there is a ring around the shaft? Unscrew the ring (looks like a very thick washer with two slots in the side or holes in the top). There may or may not be very thin shims behind it. To tighten your headspace, increase the thickness of the shims. To loosen your headspace, remove or decrease the thickness of shims. Now you may need to contact Bob Naess or Goldsmith to get some shims. The shims look like very thin washers.

Have you bought "The Devils Paintbrush" by Goldsmith... if so I think it explains it all in there. If not its a must for anyone interested in Maxims... Great book!

Ok here is a picture of about what your internals look like.

The line is where the Lock comes off the crank arm. You can also see the hole in the side where you can unscrew the "thick washer" type nut. The arrow is where shims may or may not be. By adding shims you will move the lock closer to barrel giving you tighter headspace. By removing shims you will pull the lock away fromt he barrel loosening the headspace.

Now how exactly to measure how much you should add or subtract, or if to use a headspace gauge or not... that I can not really help you with... as I said I have never done it. Good luck!

Thanks for all the info! I'll have to take a look at the locks I have and see what I can do. I do have Dolf's book but I can't remember where that info is in there. I'll have to leaf through it again. I'll PM you for your e-mail address and I can send you the short video.
