SARCO Kit Arrived - Wasted Barrel

Post by nutsrusted »

Well, the M53 kit arrived and I a little disappointed because the barrel is corroded. I tried to run the brush down it but it just won't clean up. Rifling is almost gone.

Here's a picture of a kit that was posted by another member. I circled the parts that were not in my kit.

The other parts in the kit look good and all in all not allot missing. I'm interested in what the other kits are like.

The two nuts hold the recuperator. My kit had the bolts but not the nuts. The cam rivet is no big deal. The other two parts that go into the receiver concerns me.

Check RTG for the missing parts. http://www.robertrtg.com/ He may have what you need in the small stuff. Good people to deal with. Their price on the MG42 tripod (with optics!)is also very good right now (never likely to be cheaper).
Barrels are scarce but not impossible to obtain. I would pick up what ever you find, as you find it. They are not cheap, but buy it when you see it. The lesson comes from .50 cal ammo - I thought it was expensive, but in hindsight it wasn't and now NONE can be found.
Also your current barrel has value to those building dummy guns. Selling that (currently I wouldn't) would offset the cost of a better one.
In your position I would get on a waiting list for one of those new receivers. When they come out you'll get one OR, you'll be waiting for everybody else to get theirs, the mfr will catch up and FINALLY you'll get one (at the new, higher price).

What new recievers are you talking about. From whom?

A kit I got from SOG a while back had a "tent stake" barrel (not good for much more than a tent stake). They promptly replaced it with the nicest barrel I own.

The optics for the current issue tripod for the MG42/53/3 (all of them) are excellent. Mine are like new in outstanding condition. I would expect this particluar "batch" to be all like this. The manufacturer is Hensoldt, which is an old, well established, very high quality producer of optics (you can search them and learn more). There is a battery pack/light that comes with the unit to illuminate the cross hair in the scope. It's wear and tear is on the outside of the case and age to the rubber parts inside. It uses two D cell batteries and with a little tinkering I had that working. There is a corded light that clips on the scope to illuminate the scope picture. Neat stuff, and the same light will clip on my HK (Hensoldt) scope for my model 91 rifle.
The tripod is also almost unused, highly adjustable and pretty well thought out. If you like mechanical things like guns and stuff - this is right up your alley.

I know I sound like a salesman, but it just ain't so. I am an enthusiast and I am 100% pleased with this unit. (can you tell?)

I'm trying to clean the barrel up by plugging one end and filling it up with gun solvent.

I don't want to sell it until I get something better. I only have one parts kit and the way things are drying up, I'll be lucky to have enough parts for one build.

Do you guys know what those two small square pieces I circled in the picture are for? I didn't see them listed on the parts diagrams and I wanted to know a little more about them. Looks like they are riveted in the rear of the receiver and may have not been removed durring demill.

From what I read those small nuts (not the bolts) for the recuperator could be obtained off the shelf or easily made from a common nut.

Thanks guys.

Hi Nuts:

Those two blocks are riveted into the rear of the reciever to hold the buffer/buttstock in. I've got an extra pair...PM me with your address and I'll send them to you.

i was going to say the same thing but in reverse -use the tiny rifle illuminator on the tripod optics , tapco sells replacements around $20 i think. FYI

Its amazing anything works right around here with a bunch of

Drooling Idiot - you are right- the slick little clip on light is made for my HK rifle scope, but will fit the older style MG3 scope as well (both scopes are from the same manufacturer, lets figure that one out GTS ).
Bil - No, I don't believe the two styles of tripod scopes can be confused. As I recall the older style is stubby and boxy and complex looking (am I good at this description stuff or what?) while the newer is much more like a periscope made of tubing. I am not sure one will mount on the other tripod. You would have to check with someone else on that question.

My Sarco kit just arrived at work so I haven't had much time to look at it, though I did look down the barrel. Really nice lands and grooves no apparent corrosion, that alone was worth the cost of the parts kit. I will try to post some pictures as soon as I can get it out of the box and lay it out.

OK Bil - how about some pix for you?

The old, original optics can be seen here - http://panzer46.net/mg42board/viewtopic ... ght=optics

So far, the best pic of the new optic is here- http://www.panzer46.net/mg42board/viewt ... ght=optics

When I figure out how to post, I'll take some myself and you can see the new stuff a bit clearer.

Here are the pics of the Kit, everything is clean with minimal scuffs and/or scrathes the barrel is nice with great lands and groves. The kit came with a bunch of screws and tiny little pieces...all in all well worth the price Sarco was asking.

vic,

Some people have all the luck. My barrel is beyond hope. I returned your picture with some observations and questions.

*The X2 means there should be two of them
*The ? means what the heck is that
*Extra means I think you only need one

Check to see if the spring is inside the hole I point to. If not you may be missing a spring. I guess for 200 bucks you take what you can get.

I'm a newbie so correct me if I'm wrong.

I got my three kits in the mail from Sarco today as well. I pulled out the barrels and two look mint but the third one looks pretty bad. I will pull everything out on Friday and clean them up and photograph them.

By the way what is the best way to clean all that grease off from the parts? Especially the wood? I also would like to post my picts so someone can give me some ideas about my kits.

Thanks
