Who ordered from CFS...
Welcome to the board8mm-man wrote:About the hand pick.
When I ordered, I did not see a reference to this on their site.
Is this a past thing? Or do they do it now?
I could find no options for it anywhere.

I didn't know that CFS would do handpicks on parts kits, either, until I saw a post on one of the other boards -- can't remember which. The next time I spoke to Centerfire about the backorder delivery schedule, I asked them about a handpick and upgraded my order at that time.
How much good does a handpick upgrade really do? I don't know. The pictures I've seen of the other CFS kits that have been delivered so far indicate that they have all been just as good as mine except -- maybe -- for the barrel condition. As I said, the one I received has a VERY nice bore. I guess as with everything else, "ya pays yo' money and ya takes yo' chances."

I order 2 SOG kits last year. They were good. 8mm barrels had strong rifling but bores where pitted and dark but chambers where good. Will make good blaster barrels I guess. The good thing is one of my M53 kits had some german marked parts like the topcover, buffer, feed tray. I pretty much bought them for spare parts and the barrels...but with the news of Wiselite making receivers I just might have to make another MG42 and keep it as a spare.

I'm seriously thinking about getting one of these kits. My 42 is in .308 right now and I would like to be able to convert it to 8mm. I've got spam cans of 8mm that I would like to try in it. Be fun to use the original 8mm in it. Since the gun is already built, all I need is the top cover, feed tray, barrel, etc. to convert it. The rest of the parts would be spares.
Plunck the parts into a bucket of mineral spirits. Cosmo just melts away then. You have have to pass a q-tip through some little slots or springs, but it mostly just goes away.BUILDIT wrote:Kit looks good orderd one from SOG $250 last week hope its in good shape.buy the way thay must love grease i thaught my yugo ak was bad.

I'm still reminded of the $35.00 Sten mk2 kits from the 80's. It gives me the cold chills.
I might even order two more.

almost all your questions can be answered by hitting the MG42 FAQ button at the top right side of your screen or in the stickies/reference section. heres a good link to a ton of info to help you identify what parts are what ,
http://www.panzer46.net/mg42board/viewtopic.php?t=3904
other than that and the description from CFS theres no telling exactly what they'll actually send.

Along with the big parts I posted above, I got this in the small parts bag.
I'm a noob to this too, and spent the last day searching this site to figure these out.
From right, the front sight and booster detent/catch with spring holder and mounting pins.
Tripod and grip mount. The large pin is for the tripod, the 2 piece pin is for the rear of the grip housing.
Nuts, one is for the recuperator stud, not sure on the other yet.
Top cover and feed tray pin. I think mine is broken, like someone drove it out with a punch instead of rotating it to align the flats
Ejection port dust cover
Buffer detent/catch
Lots of good closeup pictures here: http://198.144.2.125/MG42/Machinengeweh ... ctures.htm

Did those of you who ordered from CFS receive all of your small parts? I just cleaned up my newest kit yesterday and the only small parts I received was the grip/tripod mounting bracket, a nut, and a small roll pin. I called CFS to ask for replacements and was told that they would be sent to me. Then I received a return call informing me that CFS had sent out everything that came with the kits and no replacement parts were available.
(CFS has been very good in the past at replacing bad or missing parts, so I'm a bit disappointed that they will not be following up on these "short" kits--especially since I paid an extra $20 hand-select fee. I'll still be buying from them because they've gone out of their way for me in the past -- I'll just have to keep this incident in mind
)
1) Did any of you run into the same thing? Did CFS do anything to make up the shortage?
2) I'll be needing a package of small parts (ejection port cover; top cover/feed tray hinge pin; grip mounting bolts; large tripod mounting bolt; recoup nut; front sight/recoil booster detent arm/spring assembly/roll pins/ etc..). If anybody has an extra bag or collection of parts please let me know how much you want for them. (I can actually do without the ejection port cover because I have an extra one.)
Thanks,
GeeDeeEmm
