Barnes C-10,,,I can't seem to keep my Barrels from Rusting a

Post by BernieT »

Hi Guy's,,!
I though why I was in Bass Pro shops to pick up some of the Barnes C-10,,since I use their bullets in my hunting rifles, and I though,,why not on my MG42?, so I followed the instructions to the T, and scrubbed my 42', and my 2 AK's,,low and behold, rust appeared!,,,I cleaned with out the C-10, and re-oiled,changed the desicant in the safe,,and two days later,,,rust is back,,!!,,we live in Colorado, dry, most of the time, 10-40% humidity,,,today again, 3rd time,,,rust again, even though they have a heavy oil film in them,,I looked at the desicant,Blue,,means its not exhausted,,Help,,,did this stuff(it's strong Amonia),,get in the pores?,,maybe I need to shoot the heck out of them, warming them up, to release it?,,I am desperate,,Thank-You in advance,,! The other Guns not cleaned with the C-10, show no rust in the bores.

Would a mixture of white vinegar and water perhaps neutralize the ammonia? I never did anything special to my barrels. Some say rinse at the range with windex or a week solution of ammonia and water if your worried about the corrosive ammo. And then clean when you get home. Some say just plain old water is the best to clean the corrosive ammo deposits is all that is needed. I like brake cleaner because its quick and easy, but not cheap though. Also, I use break free for everything. And have had no corrosion issues.

I can't remember where I saw this. I'll have to search for the link. But someone did a long study on corrosive ammo and cleaners. Windex, Ed's red, break free, ammonia and water mixture, and it seems as just plain old water did the best for cleaning. Go figure. But break free did the best for a light oil to protect. Maybe if your having real problems, perhaps LPS 3 which is an oil with a preservative in it. sort of waxy. But you would need to clean the barrel before every use. That's why the military uses break free. You don't have to clean the barrel. Just start blasting away.

Think this might be it http://www.surplusrifle.com/reviews2006 ... /index.asp

I test fired mine today and two hours later I looked and it had rust. I cleaned it with hot water in the shower, it has the removable head with jet setting which worked very nicely. After that I cleaned with CLP.

That's the common thread,,,I used the Yugo ammo, in the 42's barrels, and also Yugo in the AK's, so hot water and break free, walmart available,is what's in store, for them. i put one of those de-humidifier rods in there yesterday, I'll go and check them again.....
you guys are the greatest!
