The MG51 has a resemblance to the MG42 and is perhaps based originally on the concept but its actually a different gun. The rear section of the receiver is machined and the front is a sheet metal stamping welded to the receiver. The bolt uses a flap lock rather than the rollers and no parts other than the belt are interchangeable with the MG42 types. The MG51's were originally made in 7.5mm Swiss. I don't know if any were converted to .308 or not. I believe the Swiss have adopted the MAG58 in .308 now and the MG51's have been relegated to reserve use. You might find more info on swissrifles.com if you post on the other swiss weapons board. The guns are pretty heavy and are typically Swiss. They are heavy and beautifully made.

Hope that helps some.
