Poppin' the cherry on my Steyr MG74

Post by TactAdv »

Here's a picture from when I took out my new, unfired, Steyr MG74 for the first time ever. The gun was absolutely new, unfired, since it was mfg'rd in 1981 till I shot it earlier this year. Not too often one gets a chance to do that. My friend is shooting, I got camera duty.

Unfired? Where do you find one like that? That's great! You gotta tell us how it grouped off the bipod!

Aww, come on Tom.... I can top that. Yours was only 26 years old when the cherry was popped.

My MG42 was 50 when it was shot at my house (in 1993) for the very first time. Yup, totally unfired since new. I swapped all the parts I could from a parts kit and saved all the original parts in unfired condition. I still have the barrel that is serial numbered to the gun, with the original storage grease still in the bore. I've had people tell me that they never serial numbered the barrels to the gun, well I have the proof that they did. The only non-matching part on my 42 is the bolt. For some reason, the Germans wouldn't let it be exported with the bolt, but letting everything else go was OK.

I'm about the 5th owner, but owner number 4 (a good friend, now passed) bought it and we shot it for the first time at my house. I got it from him.
