carry handle
carry handle
Can anyone offer some background on a MG34 handle that would fit in the rear grovves of the barrel jacket where a AA tripod mount fits? Would be useful in light machine gun role when quickly advancing or retreating. Could not find it in Universal Machine Guns - Was this a standard issue, rare or post war part?
Re: carry handle
I think it is post war from Israel
Re: carry handle
Yes, 100% postwar. The reason why the MG34/42 sling is "split" is just for this purpose. You do not need a carrying handle if you use the original sling, as it will nicely keep the gun "arrested" and well balanced when you advance or retreat!

Re: carry handle

Re: carry handle
Are you sure it was an MG34 and not an MG13 or 15?Gowert wrote:if they are postwar ? then why have i seen original eary wehrmacht photos of MG34's with carrying handles ?

Re: carry handle
eds,
i am afraid i dont have pictures at hand eds. I have seen a few, and http://www.germanmilitaria.co.uk/mg34.htm seem to also think it is a ww2 object. Why do you discredit it to be post war, what have you been told and seen ?

Re: carry handle
They are Israeli, they were imported with the Israeli kits by IMA in the early 1990s and have been floating around ever since. - Matt

That is a nice web site. Please note that the wooden transit case in the first photo is for the MG34's sold to Portugal. Regarding the handle, there is no information on these in any field manual. Strange there would be such a handle and yet the manuals explain how to use the split sling as a handle and make no mention of this wooden handle. I also put a great deal of faith in the Myrvang book. He has found no photos, manuals, diagrams or examples of this handle produced as a German WWII item, and his research has been extensive. Should you have such a picture, it would be a real discovery.
Re: carry handle
i am willing to put my hands up to say ' hmm, i believe i must be mistaken', i just swear i saw pictures of the MG 34 with the carrying, but i must be wrong.
Re: carry handle
http://www.sarcoinc.com sells them for $50. They have a rough phosphate finish and no locking key. Thay do clean up nice and the locks are easy to make. Definetly Post war from Israeli
Spell check is down and I'm too lazy to get the dictionary
