Looking for MG42 RAIL ALIGNMENT TOOL

Post by Hitman »

Does any one know where I can find a MG42 rail alignment tool or where I can find the source of the ones from Weaponeer, who I've heard is Ken Robison.
Does any one have a used MG42 rail alignment tool they want to sell?

Hitman, here is a linc to one on GunBroker http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewIt ... m=84009966
This looks like the one Critical Dimentions are selling, but I can't be sure. The Critical Dimentions ones are a nice piece of work.

This is NOT the one by critical dimention, although the basic design is the same. The CD unit doesn't have the flattened section in the middle where the bolts for the rivet buck seat.I do not understand this buck,it is relying on too many points of contact to be sturdy. Also,it cannot be used next to the small guide blocks ,2 to a side.It also looks like it won't work on the rear pair of rivets. The main jib looks OK to me.This is just my opinion,I would like to hear any others.Thanks. ---bilPS I am not disparaging this tool,it may be fine for what you are doing.

The Jig I received from CD has the flat edge for the bucking tools to seat flat on, it was one of their later design jigs.

The later version has flats milled between the rail guide blocks on the fixture so the rivet buck blocks & short jack screws can be used in conjunction with the alignment fixture in place, i.e. a couple of rivets can be set while rails are correctly positioned, using the Alignment Fixture, to the barrel bore centerline, once a couple of rivets are set on each side, the alignment fixture is removed and the remaining rivets can be set with the buck blocks and longer jack screws provided.

Thank you for the explanation, now is see how it would work.I have one of the previous models. These are very well built.Do the bucking blocks have a provision for doing the rivets that are close to the guide blocks on the rails? ---bil

Yes, the bucking blocks have a clearance cut just for that.

How much does a set of the new CD rail alignment and bucking tools run?

Are these really required? This is the first I've seen of these, I'll be putting in a set of rails shortly. Chris...

There's always more than one way to do something in most cases. Installing rails in a new receiver versus a reweld can vary also. The Rail Alignment Fixture insures correct positioning of the rails to the centerline of the barrel bore and it's much better to be able to set a few rivets while holding the rails in the exact position, a couple of small vise-grip clamps on the rear of rails/receiver helps too. Makes for perfect installaition every time. We learned of this process while working in Norway and visiting a MG3 repair/rebuild facility. A similar alignment tool was used there.
RTG parts has the Receiver Repair and Inspection Fixture which can also be used to check or set receiver assemblies.
