Are rails interchangable? Left and right?

Post by ScottD »

Guys, I think I might have been drunk at the time but I recall reading that the rails are differeent for the left and right side. IIRC they said it would install but not work right. Was I having one too many Budweisers? They look exactly the same to me....

IIRC the left side was machined down on the edges to clear the recouprator or something like that?? Hope that helps.

The rails are the same. If you look VERY closely you'll see that one side is thinner than the other - that is to give space for the recuperator to be mounted below the left side.

Here is a poor photo trying to show the thick and thinness. Where the 2 rails are touching is meant tho show this.

Old style rails are NOT the same. There is a left and right. New style rails will fit either side.

John is right,as usual. The old style rails -the thin rail goes on the left side,as you look down the gun-the thin rail is on the bottom. ---bil

Our experience with the M53 is that the rails are is sets of "left" and "right".

Tony,

This is off subject, but what's the latest word on being able to purchase one of your M53 receiver sections?

The question is presented by us at least once a month.
No change to the guidance from the customer that we manufacture these for.
Internally we have been considering that once we do/if we get permission to sell just the receiver, that we perform some machining/welding operations and sell as an FFL item.

Indeed and I have to add.

Digging through this amassed information is at first helpful for answers to technical questions, but secondly it is very comical to read through the real-time struggles, questions, surprises, and theories that are on record while working through the learning curve on these builds. It is priceless from an Anthropological standpoint.

It really has only been several years ago but it feels like so much more, here's to the archives. :D

I agree-I strongly urge that folks spend the time to look through the old posts-you will see that what is a fairly uncomplicated build is something that was worked out over time, with much trial and error. My hat is off to those 'pioneers'that helped get us where we are today. There were times we weren't even sure it could be done!! ---bil

There's a thin portion in the front under where the receiver dips slightly under the feed tray, on the top of the left and the right side rails. You really have to look for it, or its easy to miss.
