k98 - m98?

Hello, i hope this falls into this discussion part. I went to mitchell mausers web site. They are selling M98 mausers. I was wanting to know if anyone has bought anything from them?

I just picked up an M48 at a recent gun show for $90. It is in great condition; I can post pics when I get home this weekend. My mauser was $90. Imagine the condition of a Mitchell Collector or Premium grade m48. It would be simply orgasmic. M48's are still cheap, but what Mitchell offers must be insane!

Ok, sorry if this reply is utterly worthless, but for quality I am sure that Mitchell will exceed your expectations. He also advertises in alot of history an weapons magazines; so he is not some kind of basement dealer.

I don't know anyting about M98's but I would do alot of reserch before I bought a MM.
Their German K98's are a joke.

I've seen the M48's sold at shows and through dealers, that are just as nice as Mitchell's...but, if you like spending more for something you can get for less, then Mitchell's it is. In addition, their refurbed K98's and pistols are poorly done. They must have no idea what an original rifle/pistol looked like. Their idea of restoring is chucking it in a hot blue tank, then slathering on the wood finish....in the white bolts???? I'm not even going there.

And don't forget their K98's are numbers matching. I did get to see one first hand at a local show. Quite disturbing.

ic ic. i say there m98s, they are made in Yugoslavia off the the same dies as the K98s because they where left there after Nazi Germany got pushed out. They looked the same to me as the K98s, but ill look more in depth into with the info provided here. Thanks all for your replies i appreciate it.

I have only seen their K98's in magazines, but have read plenty about them on gunboards and parallax curio forum, all I can say is "warning! warning!, danger Will Robinson!" Avoid them like the plague, they also have a negative rating with the better business bureau. Pick up a nice K98 Russian Capture from Interordinance or Classic Arms. Or do what I did, find a nice K98 that has had the stock sportered (make sure the metal hasn't been drilled and tapped), and put it back into military configuration. I have a beautiful S/42G with almost all matching numbers for 250$ invested. Chris...

AVOID Mitchell's Mausers at ALL COST. They recondition and RESTAMP rifles as "all matching". That's FORCE MATCHING, in other words, COUNTERFEIT guns with NO collector value. They LOOK nice, but are WAY over priced. There is no collector value in s Yugoslavian M48A rifle, nice guns though they are, and I bought one UNFIRED NEW for $150 a year ago. Mitchell's price? $450.00. What a scam.

What a shame. I knew that their rifles were overpriced; though their cheaper k98's are at competitive prices (atleast for here in New York), but I see them advertising in alot of veterans magazines..... trying to take advantage of vet's with these overpriced rifles.....

Well I might be one of those that got scammed. We will see. I've been away from firearms for about 6 years since my son was born. I picked up a shotgun news the other day and went "wow, where did all the cool import stuff go?". So I've always wanted a K98. I called a friend and he recommended Mitchell. He has a collector grade that he is really happy with. So I decided if I'm going to ever get one I better get on the stick. Unfortunately I ordered it before researching on the web. There is alot of negative info about the company. So I called them and asked them specifics. They claim that they do not refinish the firearms themselves. That was all done in 45 after the war in Germany. Now they may be selling me a bag of goods. The rifle is already in transit so I'll pick it up and decide if I'm happy or not. If not, I'll send it back. I'll let you know of my experience if you are interested.

Absolute BS. Their K98k's are all restamped and refinished russian capture rifles that you can get for far less money. If it were me, I wouldn't even open the box before I went for a return.

I think the imports that FGS has are nice for history. Not really shooters, but at least thay are in some what orig mis-matched condition and only $250. Somethimes you get lucky and have some matching parts.

My best friend has bought at least four K98k RCs from Southern Ohio Gun (SOG) over the last year. He ordered handpick on them all, and every one of them has been very, very nice with all waffens in place.

Only one of them had been electropenciled. Of course, none of the bolts match, and only one of them had matching numbers on everything else. But as far as being nice shooters, they were very impressive.

He removed the Russian refinish and returned them to their original stain and BLO finish. All but one still had the waffens and other numbers still on their stocks. That one stock had been heavily sanded so that the markings on the stock were almost gone. But it still finished nicely.

He paid $200 -- 250 each for them. Like others here, I would strongly recommend picking up one of the RC Mausers rather than the Mitchell stuff.

ya id like to know how you feel about your purchase. I have they web site saved and i found there m98s to be around $200, which aint bad but if they are junk i want NO part of it. Thanks again for all the info.
