my recent build #2

Post by haseo8up »

This is my #2 build. I used a 4 cut reciever that I tried to sell on gunbroker because it was cut pretty bad, but it was a German reciever, nobody wanted it, so I needed a challenge. The cuts were well over a 1/4 inch and I had do a lot of filling and used a lot of filler rod. I had to fabricate a new buffer latch stud on the rear, not hard, but the cut was right through it. I had to use a new ratchet plate and welded it on no problems. It is the half dimple one, only one I could get at the moment. Cam area was a pain. It had so much gap and after building up the area and finally welding it together, I had to end up cutting it another 3 times in order to get it straight. I ended up having to weld maybe a 1/4 inch on one side, let it cool, bend it to straighten it out, weld on the other side, cool, then bend it again, and so on until it was straight and welded together. The threaded nozzle bearing was destroyed, so I had another lying around, had to frabicate some more steel round tube in order to get it positioned just right, you can see by the two weld areas, one for the bearing, and the other for attaching onto the reciever shroud.

On a scale, it was without a doubt a 10 hard. What made it easier was that it was my second 42 build. If it was my first, then I may have given up. This one was much more harder than the first IO cut reciever I used. I still have some clean up to do on it, then it will be blasted and parked.

As for a range report. I cannot get .308 to work out of it, but load up the 8mm and off to the race it goes. Accomplishment is achieved when it fires and cycles without any problem in 8mm reloads and without any slam fires. I cut off .600" on the rear of the original firing pin, and use another .600" more on the firing pin extension where it meets the firing pin to reduce slam fires and it has worked great for me. The firing pin extension is based off of Pirates design. So, I'll use this one for 8mm firing, and my first build will be for .308 set up.

Guess I'll save my Dan's 3 cut reciever for a rainy day or when I need cash.

Pics are gone. I don't know why it happens, but occationally entire series of pics will drop off of this site. I've had to go back to old posts and reload the pictures I used to illustrate my posts.

If anybody knows why this happens I'd like to know.

redo, did not realize they were gone. Update to my first post, got it running in 8mm and 7.62 now. Waiting for the weather to clear up a bit before I blast it and put a nice park on it.

This is the engraving I put on it
