Being that it was buried for decades its hard to say. Steel gets brittle with age and hardened steel is brittle to begin with. One thing could have been the mud inside may have froze and expanded the whole receiver slightly sort of like when you have too many ice cubes in a glass and they expand and crack it. Hardened steel like that can be funny too if its scratched pressure can make it crack along the line like glass. Which BTW is why you should never file on a barrel extention or camming peice.
