I have just acquired 2 more 08 belts, but there are differences between the length of the brass starter tabs. Could someone explain the reason?
Thanks.. Paul.

Re: More German 08 Belts...
Paul no wonder I cannot seem to find to buy any ammo belts - you are hoovering them all up!!!
If the Imperial German Army WWI MG belts followed the principle of the British Expeditionary Force usage, British starter tabs were issed in different lengths (and sizes) for aircraft and tank use. The principle being gloved hands needed larger starter tabs. I have 2 very rare WWI vickers ammo belts specifically for British tank use and these ae indeed larger and longer.
Now whether this explains the German differences who knows although they were late to use tanks. Perhaps it is a manufacturer difference, perhaps Bulgarian maxim....I do not know.
Anyway please let me know when you stop buying good condition MG08 or 08/15 German belts so that I have a chance!!!!

Re: More German 08 Belts...
Hello,
For DWM belts, besides the markings on the starter tabs, the total length of long spacers provides a clue as to the caliber of the belt :
if long spacer = approx 61,7mm then caliber is :
- 7,92X57 for German MG 08 if the starter also bears German inspection stamps (Gothic letter under Imperial Crown or Waffenamt Eagle)
- 7x57 for export to Serbia if no German inspection stamp on starter
if long spacer = approx 57,7mm then caliber is (all starters devoid of German inspection stamp) :
- 7,65x54 for export to Belgium with numbers inked on fabric in Latin figures
-7,65x54 for export to Turkey with numbers inked on fabric in Arabic figures
- 8x50R for export to Austria and Bulgaria
The clue to tell apart 7,65 from 8x50R belts is the fit of the cartridge in the pocket : 8x50R would hardly not fit into a 7,65 belt.
Your belt with the approx 57,7mm long spacers is most probably a Bulgarian export. Many of these belts have been found among standard WW2 Russian Maxim belts in a depot in Bulgaria.

Concerning your other belt by Simson dated 1929, could you please confirm that the solid rivet at the end of the long spacers is made of Brass.
Cheers,
JFL

Re: More German 08 Belts...
Hello,
on the 1929-dated belt by Simson, could you please check if the other starter is also marked "/32".
Thanks

Paul & JFL - did we get a final answer on this thread. Amazing info and makes the difference between a purchase of a DWM made belt WWI period.....that is not for German usage. Great education - thanks.
