Re: Looking for demilitarized MG42
I think I will sell the shroud after removing the sight and barrel change flap and replace it with a new manufactured one. I'll put it in our for sale area or you can just read this and contact me and make an offer.
Re: Looking for demilitarized MG42
I would not replace anything - just sell it as is.
RTG sells the door but you need the rivets and the door is $45.00 and the rivets are $18.00 and you will need shipping for a few bucks more.

Re: Looking for demilitarized MG42
I see what you mean Robert. That would be less trouble and I'd get a better price for the piece. Would you PM me and suggest a price I can reasonably ask?
Thanks!
Thanks!

I see that and it's just like the one I have. Thanks for the heads up. I think I'll ask $240.00 for mine plus cont. USA shipping.

Yours seems to have just a more meat where the holes are.

What does the top of your top cover look like? Big yugo crest or small stampings or ?
Also you have a nice front barrel shroud. Why are you looking at selling it? It's long enough to use a brp rear receiver on . A lot of the parts kits the shroud is not long enough and you have to part things together.

Here are two pics of the top of the shroud. I saw no markings at all anywhere on the shroud. Your take 42rocker?

Here's what I'm thinking about replacing it with. I won't have to have the front piece welded back on.

That is a jugo barrel shroud if that is what you are asking. The only way to have something look just like a German shroud is to use an original or the one the Brian makes at brp.
http://www.brpguns.com/mg42-semi-receiver-parts/
Which is also the one the rtg sells.
Brian did a good job in making these. The front sight area on his looks like a short step German receiver area. I always try to buy from the source. That way Brian is there for help if you need it.
Really the yugo barrel shroud looks very close to a German shroud. If you add a front sight holder to it, then it looks really close. Yes, I can tell, but most of the world that you will deal with will not notice.
If you take and add your shroud to Brian's rear receiver pack then you have it.
http://www.brpguns.com/products/MG42-Re ... l-Kit.html
A lot of the yugo barrel shrouds are coming in cut to close in the rear by the rear sight area to use one of the rear receivers that Brian (brp) makes so I think that you have a good shroud to use with those receivers to make a good looking mg42.

Were you super lucky and got a top cover without a yugo marking on the top. Please post a nice pic to the top cover for us to see.

Re: Looking for demilitarized MG42
As I am a lazy person I still haven't cleaned the goo off the parts (too hot outside!) But I took a closer look and cleaned some areas and photographed them. It seems to have the Yugo crest on the gun cover and a serial number on the base of the barrel. There also is a number "679" in the base of the rear sight. I removed it from my ebay listing until I can get more info. What's your opinion?

Re: Looking for demilitarized MG42
JohnB, Keep your shroud. You've got a good one. BRP front is nice but the time it takes to replace your front bushing will likely be exceeded. i.e. front sight pocket milling/drilling, Barrel door support bracket mounting, Barrel stop installation, Barrel door riveting, Rear sight mounting. Plus you will end up with a shorter shroud than what you have. Take a look at the BRP rear sections. Lots of help out here.

Re: Looking for demilitarized MG42
Thanks! I likely will keep it and get the receiver and other needed parts from BRP. I'm just put off by the need for re-welding which I don't have a clue about. I wonder if there are any MG42.com members close to me that are knowledgeable and would look it over, etc? I'm in Shreveport, LA.roadrunner wrote:JohnB, Keep your shroud. You've got a good one. Everything that you have shown so far I'm thinking is yugo. Still unless you run into some nuts like me then they will still think that it's a German mg42. It's the cool factor.

Re: Looking for demilitarized MG42
Yep, it's Yugo alright but that's okay with me. It's mighty cool!
Time for dumb questions: If I get the rear sheet metal parts http://www.brpguns.com/products/MG42-Re ... l-Kit.html will I then have most of what's needed for a semi-auto rebuild? I'll need a new nose piece for the flash hider to screw on to. Does Brad have that? And after seeing my photos is there anything else I'd need? Your help is greatly appreciated! By the way, I just sent Brad at BRP a e-mail asking for some assistance from him also. Maybe I can get this thing together with all of y'all's help!

Re: Looking for demilitarized MG42
FYI
It's Brian @ brp --- really nice guy..
In my thoughts if you get Brian's "MG42 Rear Sheet Metal Kit" at $375, add your current kit and add in rtg's "MG3 Front Sight Base and Receiver Bushing" @ $79.95 and lots of hard work you should have it made. Also rtg's front end looks like the German short step front sight area's. Also cheaper to go that way.
http://www.robertrtg.com/mg3_front.html
As far as the welding goes there are several schools of thought
1 do it yourself and learn by doing.
2 talk with a welder about doing it. Ok, this brings up several issues one being most welders do not know how to this type of work. They learned to weld a seam and most do a great job. One long weld and their done. PROBLEM is that this type of welding, which is great for most welding work, causes distortion and twisting and some other neat stuff. Getting a welder to do small bits here and there is whats needed. Like I said most are trained to do a nice really pretty long weld. Did I say nice and pretty. That's the problem. Small bit here and there to keep down the heat and distortion and then you get to do lots of grinding. Also there is a slight legal issue if you have someone else do the welding. If someone else did it -- no -- wait I'm sure that you said that you did it. Whatever there is also the issue on where the "welder" stops doing the welding for you. Whatever.
temp display -- well a tube and a few screws might give you the start of a pretty temp display.
Whatever you do don't cut on the back of the barrel shroud always cut the other piece.

Re: Looking for demilitarized MG42
I’ll bet most people don’t know the difference from a SEMI Yugo M53 from a SEMI German MG42, MG1, MG2 or MG3. Most will just say “Wow, that is a BIG machine-gun. Is that ILLEGAL?”
Then you can just smile and "This is about the history about it."
