ATF Classifies Semi-Auto MG42 a "Firearm"
Any ground weapon such as these that are shoulder supported, tripod mounted, beltfed, and are not weapons that you can just pick up and fire from your shoulder like your grandads .22 will always be reclassified as a "firearm" as defined. Even a weapon like the mag fed Browning BAR and it's foreign relatives should be reclassified as "firearms". Weight and bulkiness of a weapon and if the weapon was originally a crew served weapon will have bearing on how it is classsified.
The MG-34 will fall under this same classification.

ATF rescinded the letter declaring the semi MG42 a "firearm" about one month later.
A semi MG42 is a "rifle" according to the ATF because it has a butt-stock.
