Ok, From The Devil's Paintbrush:

Maxim Model 1894 Ludwig Loewe/DWM

Surviving guns:

Serial number, year, Manufacturer, Present Location
23, 1894, Loewe, Private Collection
239, 1895, Loewe, Naval Ordnance, Gosport UK (taken from Uboat UC44 on 8/4/1917)
278, 1896, Loewe, Tower of London
343, 1897, DWM, USMC Quantico VA
345, 1898, DWM, USMC Quantico VA
490, 1904, DWM, Academy West Point NY
633, 1907, DWM, Naval Academy MD

So this is a recorded gun. Also the last made of those known to still exist. Sounds like its time for you to make a trip to Quantico... its right down the road!

Yeah Man, hit two with one stone!

Now if you find out that these Maxims were made in Japan and shipped to Germany in Uboats, we are going to have a disagreement!

haha, however, it wouldn't suprise me that Japan did end up with a few after "liberating" german held islands in the pacific after ww1. Given the Vietnamese marked mg34, i'd say it could happen.

Yeah I would say thats possible some might have been captured by the Japs in WWI. Same with Russian Maxims the Japs captured in the 1905 war. I agree!

That MG34 was most likely captured by the Russians on the Eastern front and supplied to Commie countries as War aid. Just like Israel had tons of captured German Equipment the Allies supplied. Hell was it Bulgy or Yugo was still using MP44s into the late 80s...

An Israeli friend was trained on the MG34 in the 60s,they were still in use. Never know what you will find in the back rooms of those museums... ---bil
