and to think I had sold my wife....................
I did not win sadly Matt. I put in a crazy bid, over the normal value of something like this and was not even close. I know it is an accepted practice for some but the winner used this '15 seconds to go' facility and clearly put in a Euro1200 plus bid, as someone else was just pipped at Euro1k plus.
I can only congratulate the winner as it was indeed a nice item, and as always offer my hand in marriage
to them.
Interesting to see what the leather patterns are worth and with your post WWI example they too cannot be cheap.

Re: Some Rarer German Maxim items I have picked up lately!
Is there another way to bid on ebay other then the last 15 seconds???
Seriously it dumb to bid before... just gives people time to bid the price up.
Fritz, did you get it? I am willing to bet it was not Bob!
So is the leather version worth more or less???

Interesting views on Ebay bidding techniques Matt
Personally I operate with a target price in mind and whack it in. Certainly the pieces we are after people have a price in mind anyway and bidding in the last 15 seconds very rarely changes much. In this instance the winner of the tools case was enthusiastically going for it regardless. I did try leaving a bid to the end one time and Ebay closed for maintenance so missed the opportunity all together!!!!!
Fritz I think your leather case is worth Euros100 - please sell it to me

Mark, Yeah its a bit of a risk but to many people just sit there and put 100 bids in that still don't win the auction but drive up the final price. $10 more a bid is easy and so they will go 20-50% more then if they just had to drop a single bid in. Thats why GBs bidding is so much more fair for the seller...

Re: Some Rarer German Maxim items I have picked up lately!
Hello to all,
I think that this Mg 08's ersatz tool rool goes very well on my german machine gunner

............. not, it is a joke, it is not me the best bidder; I already possessed this tool rool! I find that the price flew away, but that, it is another story!
Now I can sell a consolation prize, a beautiful leather one, from reichswher (1936) for 500 euros with sending postage included for the whole world....paypal accepted!

Best regards
David

Very nice tool roll David. I see they did not blacken your leather? I might be interested but I think mine is good enough for me.
These damn German Accessories are more expensive then the guns!

Re: Some Rarer German Maxim items I have picked up lately!
You know, there is a lot of truth in that. I once had a very experienced mg collector tell me, and you all know him, that he didnt collect accessories because he saw early on that it would severely limit the number of guns he could afford.IMBLITZVT wrote: These damn German Accessories are more expensive then the guns!
Most of the best accessories in my collection have been thrown in to "seal a deal" for a gun once the price negotiations played out.
At the end of the day when you are placed in a box and your widow is left with items you have spent most of your disposable income on, which collector is going to leave their heirs with more, the one with the boxes full of accessories or the one with 6 or 7 transferable mg's.
That being said I like the accessories also. I have paid dearly for some to complete my collection. The joy is in the hunt for them. I admit that it can quickly get out of hand and I can look at the junk sitting in boxes that I bought and start adding up what they are worth and they quickly get to the sum needed for that colt vickers, or costa rican maxim, or possibly one of the holy grail c&r brit vickers. Yet I am still content to keep all that junk and add to it, all the while pushing those grail guns out further into the future. Its a vicious cycle.

Re: Some Rarer German Maxim items I have picked up lately!
Yeah thats basically the way I look at it. I don't like to buy poorly made firearms and so they usually are not cheap. I don't reenact or do blank fire. I don't collect uniforms or gun tools or accessories. I don't have lots of mags for my guns either. You see some guys with like 50 mags for a gun. Not me. Most of my guns I have two mags for. The only place I have gone farther is German Maxim collecting. I am building a ZF12 collection and an accessory collection along with a rare parts collection. Unlike most, I like the post WWI Maxim stuff as well. I seem to be picky on accessories. I love that firing pin checking tool but if I never get a BFA I will not care. Some I find very interesting and some I don't care about at all. I still don't have a double ended Maxim wrench. I would love one of thost Lock cases that fits on your belt... However with some minor exceptions, I decided I am not going to pay top money for the accessories. I am just going to add them as the good deals come. Unless its one of those things I really like, its going to have to be cheap before I am going to buy it.jmann wrote: You know, there is a lot of truth in that. Bob, I was looking at some of the Traverse Lugs for the MG08 Sled today. That piece looks a lot like the piece that sticks in the lug to hold the chain for the lug/bottom plate connecting pin. Its got a bit longer stem but it looks like it could be the same piece just by looking at the internet pictures???bmg17a1 wrote:T
Thought I'd post a pic of this unusual chain and pin assembly for the MG08 that is on the DWM #39.
