New guy checking in, with parts kit questions...

Hey guys.

After reading through Pirate's build and chatting with some members, I'm very close to taking the plunge, picking up a kit and starting work on it.

I've read through the ways folks are preventing FA parts from being installed and other legalities prior to actual assembly. Been doing a lot of research on how the MG-42 functions and think it's something I could successfully tackle.

My question is, with all the kits being bought up, who has the better kits? I've seen some kits that have the front of the shroud cut through the threads, while other kits just have the torch cut through the sheetmetal. Iâ€™m just worried about having to redo threads and to avoid that if possible.

How are InterOrdnance' kits? I'm willing to go up to $500 for a 8mm kit, with torch cut receiver, maybe a .308 one if the price is right. Really wanting an 8mm one, but if those are tough to find, I'll settle for a cheaper, complete .308 kit.

Seen a lot advertised, but then hear they're out. Or finding kits for reasonable prices, but don't include the cut receiver.

Really leaning towards InterOrdnance, but I'd like not to get into a big hassle along the lines of them and those PPSH-41 and FAL kits that the ATF wanted parts from. Something about the trunnions I believeâ€¦

There was a similar post from a new guy(wanting to know the best kits out there 'right now').
IO would be the only set (Right now)with all recvr pieces included (regardless of how bad/where/or amount of cuts).
The Original ww2 mg42 is what I went after when buying my part sets, as did Many others. . If you want
8mm for reasons of blasting cheap, then Yugo is the way on the part set (If you're getting all recvr pieces). If I were
just now hopping on the wagon, I would pay more for the above complete set. The market let out the yugo model, so 8mm
will not be that hard to run......but you got to start with all the recvr parts (This will be the hard part right now). I think angola 'dan' has a bead
on some sets in Jan, and perhaps there's alist to get on.

Paying high for a set with just the front recr, or middle, is rediculous now that BRP has ended the sale of rear recvr halves.

Just my take. Good luck, and glad you're considering the 42.

For the money, IO is the only way to go right now. I have a yugo and German kit, trust me, buck up and buy the German kit. Much better quality and care taken on the cuts to the reciever

I only have one MG42, I got it from InterOrdnance. All I can say is that it is worth the trip to go get one yourself. You must make an appointment in advance. I went a year or two ago to pick up my MG42. The kid there must have liked me, as I was examining a part the boy said - wait - "I can get you a better one of those" - and off he went into the bowels of the warehouse to hunt up a part with better stamps, better finish, or whatever. He went through virtually every part with me. So my gun was in great shape. Except for the torch cuts... It wasn't all matching to start with, but now actually some parts do match better. Well worth my drive...well, about five hours from here, but still...
The best part is that I discovered this website and I might just have to undo my gun from a display piece. I have to check the length, and I'll need to do something to get the charging handle to move freely. Dad has a milling machine and lathe...you folks have info and ideas and instructions...I have a parts kit begging to be able to shoot, if only as a straight-pull rifle...looks like my big winter project now.

at this point your only left with one option really, inter ordnance( I/O)

i believe they only have the 8mm and 308 yugos left, no german but they do come with receievr peices. i just ordered a 8mm yugo from i/o, and it looked great. parts looked good, receivers looked good, i liked it so much, i ordered another 8mm yugo from them and got it day the other day. both kits had nice receiver peices and looks like they can be welded up noproblem.
