Confused on terminology

Post by sbude57 »

Hello all. I've got a question on the terminology and how to proceed. I picked up an M53 parts kit from APEX and was wondering if it's feasible to use the demilled shroud that came with it. If so, on the front of the shroud, the fitting that is threaded to accept the cone, is that a barrel bushing, or a receiver bushing? The reason I ask is because in one of the tutorials, the Author discusses removing it off the shroud. He refers to it as a barrel bushing. Does he actually mean the bushing that slides inside the threaded fitting? Am I reading something wrong, or are they one and the same? Thanks sbude57

The receiver bushing is the threaded part that is permanently attached to the front of the receiver/shroud and has slots in it for the barrel bearing to fit into.

The barrel bearing is a removable part that has lugs that fit into the receiver bushing in which the barrel slides into.

Bushing; permanently attached
Bearing; removable

I've heard the threaded bushing called both the barrel bushing and receiver bushing.

As for whether it's feasable to use the shroud you have depends on how/where it was cut. But most of the Apex M53 shrouds I've seen had plenty of metal left to install a new bushing. Most can be repaired. Even if cut through front sight area RTG sells the whole front section which can be spliced on as well. But if you have enough metal it is easier IMO to just knock out the old bushing, trim the end of the shroud to specs and weld a new bushing on.
