Riveting 101

Post by Hoover 1 »

I looked through the excellent MG42 semi build tutorials on the site and need some additional details on how to rivet the rails into the receiver.

Any details associated with the design of the fixtures used, how the backing bars are used to support the inside of the receiver, photos of the tooling/set up, etc, would be great.

Thanks,

There are photos of simple backing bars in my tutorial. they are 7/16" bolts and coupling
nuts turned to fit into the rails. the rivets can be crushed in a press or with a hammer or melted with a tig.

Pirate,

Very nice.

If I understand correctly, the connecting nut with radiused bolts on each end would be inserted into the rail area, aligned with the left and right rail rivets to be set and then tightened up.

If using a press, rivet forming dies would be aligned with the left and right rail rivets on the outside.

Apply the pressure and set the rivets.

Correct?

Thanks,
