Re: Looking for demilitarized MG42
Hi John, Seems like your getting all the goodys together. Looks great. Suggestion. Go to the BRP mg42 semi section and download all the prints he has online. Print them out and put them in a binder. "Got that from Flemmgunner". Really helps and all good info. Start at the front and pay close attention to the front bushing face to barrel stop shoulder length. Its 19.5". Once thats established you can work back. Best of luck to you and enjoy. RR

Thanks! I really appreciate that and I will download the diagrams, etc and put 'em in a binder as you recommend.
Thanks again.

Re: Looking for demilitarized MG42
I'm wondering if there is a step by step instruction booklet or on-line post for M53 rebuilding. WITH LOTS OF GOOD CLEAR PHOTOS. Sure would be a great help.

Re: Looking for demilitarized MG42
John, Mech warriors build is very impressive using minimal tooling. However, I would not recommend cutting your shroud off short just to use the full brp section. You should just square up what you have and cut brp section to match. You have an intact recuperator hole and that should be saved. Just my opinion. Any original location that can be preserved will save you work and time. Good luck.

Thanks for that info. Quite a project for someone new to all this. I will be wiser in the end for sure!

Re: Looking for demilitarized MG42
You may look at BRP's barrel bushing instead of using the RTG one.

It looks that Mech warriors used and that looks OK. The the RTG one would hard to match the holes in the shroud.

Here's the stuff I got. The front shroud piece from RTG and the receiver parts from BRP.

Looks like you have a fine start.... Now slow down and take a few deep breaths and review and think about the next few steps that you are going to do.
Take your time on the build and also try to enjoy it as this might just last you a lifetime when you are done. Tale a lot of pics both for you and to share with us.
A review of some of the things that I've said and others have said.
The camming area used to work just fine before it got cut up. Use it. Cut the brp piece back to match it. Don't cut up what used to work.
Since rtg got the front ends in I would not even think about redoing the front end of the yugo barrel shroud with a brp barrel bushing. A German barrel shroud would cause me to think about how it was cut etc.. Brian states that his is a perfect copy but still. In the rtg change over you will get a front sight area that looks more WW2 German and save a lot of time and money also. Sorry Brian, but. And I have several of Brian's barrel bushings that I was going to use. Now I'll have to buy more rtg front areas.
Numrich has .308 barrels for under $150.00. Review that also.
Keep your spare parts for now, after everything is done then think about selling them. The cut off scraps from the brp rear might be just what someone else needs for their build. Front sights, rear buffers pieces, old rails and ? other items.
Also start looking for several used 8mm belts also .308 belts. $5 to $10 per belt.
And again review how others redid their bolts and grip sticks into semi auto. Use search this website. Or think about spending more money and buying from Brian / brp or other.

Re: Looking for demilitarized MG42
more reading for you. Note what flemgunner had to do because he had a cut short barrel shroud. Then review what he did on the rear.

Re: Looking for demilitarized MG42
The 8mm ammo delivered today. Now I need a ammo box for it. The one I already have is 7.62 so the belted 8mm won't fit.

Re: Looking for demilitarized MG42
Make sure that the box that you are buying is 8mm. Talk to them about it as a lot of companies have not problem selling .308 boxes as German boxes for the mg42.
Keep up the good work and planning.
