AR 1944 receiver correct stock?

Post by Patsy57 »

what would the correct stock be for a AR (Mauser) 1944 phosphate finish receiver? Wood or Bakelite?

Interesting question. I'm thinking wood over bakelite. Of course either could be used as items were switched. For my self I would choose to fit what you will be using the mg42 for. If just a display light range shooter then I like bakelite. If reenacting then a less than perfect wood stock that you would not mind if it got another scratch in the field.
I think that this is one of those questions that becomes what do you want??

I use a bakelite stock when I have my mg42 on display. Switch to a wood for the range shooting that I do.

I agree with everything 42rocker has stated. If we could take a step back in time to 1944 when the 42 left the factory it would have had a wooden stock fitted.
Production of the bakelite stocks stopped in early 1943 I believe. Looking at known serial numbers for Mauser in 1943, only a very small number would be bakelite.
It is possible that no Mauser made ones had bakelite stocks. Jonathan.
