Thoughts on this MG42 AA spider sight.

Post by Tommygunn »

This guy is selling, on a regular basis, MG42 AA spider sights and he must have sold at least five or six over the past weeks, that I have seen.
The auction always uses the same photos, which doesn't help, and so Ihave just requested some photos of the item that is actually for sale.

Can anything be garnered from the photos in the auction? What distinguishes a real AA sight from a fake? Quality of stamps, size of rivets, angle of cuts at attachments point, nut and bolt design etc etc?

Here's the link:

Cheers,
Tom.

Not sure that I can help with this one, but on site repro's here is one of the clues on a run that is being sold here in the US and I think they come from overseas. Using the photos off that site you posted. Look at the first big pic and look at the bottom of the stem. On all of the repros I've bought the bottom of the stem does not have a cut angle at the bottom that would allow an easy install on to the mg42. Look at the small posted photo if the photo went down just a little bit longer then you would see the area that I'm talking about. Of course the next run they do they could fix this.
Good Luck on this one.
Ok, for everyone after the auction is over and photos are down. Look at the bottom of the site and see if there is a angle cut into the stem at the bottom or not. If no angle think repro.
This small note is just one small thing that should be looked at. I always ask a lot of questions about where it came from, who, and then who is selling it, and price and return.

Two thoughts
1st price -- if real why so cheap?
2nd how many -- how many originals did he find at one time that all look the same.

If you can buy it for this price more or less then it's about the going price for a repro. If you are going to be taking it re-enacting then for field use why not a repro. They do get bent and other things happen in the field. I would hate to damage a real one I paid $400.00 for. Some folks wear nice repro medals in the field for the same reasoning. Lose a $400 to $500 medal or lose a repro.

I wrote him a message:

Hi,
I've noticed that you have sold a number of these over the weeks but you show the same photograph. Could you send me some photos of the actual sight that you have for sale?

Regards,
Tom.

His reply:

they are all the same, just like pic

My responce:

Are they replicas then?

His reply:

no, original WWII

I currently have two of these stored in my 'Watch List' as sold. One sold on the 10th May for £51.89 and one sold on the 28th April for £56.00.
As mentioned previously, of what I have been keeping track of, he's has sold at least 4 or 5 in addition to the above and current.

The price alone indicates repros, as £60 is the going rate here. So worth buying then unless you absolutely must have an original? As 42rocker says better to use a repro?

Well on this side of the pond Sarco was selling repro's for around $40.00. For a perfect display I would want an original, but anywhere else a repro works for me.

If I were you, I would buy it as a repro, it doesn't seem like a bad price for a repro from what other well informed folks have said here.
If it turns out to be an original, it's a nice bonus.

I sent this guy a msg 3-4 months ago, mentioning that he seems to have a lot of these on hand, and asked if it was repro. He never responded, and I didn't see another auction for a few weeks.
