sights question

Post by boogie1 »

OK..so when I fire my home built mg3, it fires about a foot high at 25 yds. Now I remember reading somewhere,( and cant find anything now), that the night sights common issue was high impact, and the 1200 meter sights sold by Robert RTG will bring the point of aim way down. Is this the case? the sights front and back are all on an area of receiver that was one piece, mine was cut back past the trunnion area.
And I am going to try to work out a bolt safety of some sort so the hammer cant fall unless bolt is completely in battery. I had an OOB explosion [diz] ..no damage to me or the gun, just bent the barrel door and I hammered it back in. I checked everything else for cracks or damage. It runs pretty good now, my recoil spring for the OOB boom was an older one that I put in when my new one came apart (both were too short, hence one separated and the old one just did not have the oomph to fully chamber)
But I can tell you I was checking it in between every shot on this last trip out :cross: and she did fine, I believe once it is broken in, it will run like a top
Thanks in advance

Glad to hear that she is running fine again after an oob.
Do you have both night sights front and rear? or?

She only has the night sights at the rear. The front site is just the regular blade

to stop OOBs you need a collar on the forward portion of the firing pin that touches the striker keeping the pin from reaching the primer until the rollers have engaged the cam.
There are multiple posts describing this on the site.
"good , bad, .....I'm the man with the gun."

Its amazing anything works right around here with a bunch of
over-age juvenile delinquents running the place.

While on the subject, how do you adjust the sights on an M53? Mine is shooting anywhere from 6" to 10" high at 100 yards, and to the right. Shooting open sites, not on a Lafette at this point. Just curious how you dial it in?

The bolt conversion and grip were done by Pirate, and until I got her running, I never paid attention that the hammer can fall even with the bolt not fully engaged. Thanks for the heads up on the firing pin fix, will get that done.
so anyone know on those sights

my 53 has the same problem shooting way high.

I got the two leaf rear site...hear I should replace my rear site to fix the shooting high issue.

Haven't gone through it yet

To drooling, thanks for the tip, unless pirates design has that, I did several searches and am still a little hazy on the collar, but I will march on.
Moon, I heard that the 1200 meter sight will fix that, but I was needing the experts to chime in. Im calling Robert RTG today and will ask them.

This probably isn't right, but I noticed the 'lowest' setting on my sight is for 200m. I'm shooting at 100yd for the most part, so I would expect it to shoot a *bit* high. I wonder if that has something to do with it? I just don't see the normal way to adjust the sights on these puppies like on a normal rifle.

Next time I go to the range, I have a Lafette to mount it to, and it has the optics. Hopefully that will help 'dial it down' a bit. As it is, with it shooting as high as it is, I've been hitting the rebar target frames at the range and getting $10 charge for it each time. Starting to get a bit frustrating!

a little high I would not mind, but I am talking two feet at 50 yds. I am going to try the 1200 meter mg3 sight, which I have read (I think the night sight has to have the front and back to be right, but some have the standard front sight and the two sight rear) worse case, Hell, I built the gun, I dont think cutting down a sight would be too tough :D

If push came to shove I would add something to the top of my front sight just to help get the sights to line up better. Tape a small stick on or something to get an idea them go from there. My sights seemed off in the first shoot. First time out we did not have a set distance or anything but a few milk jugs etc to shoot at.... Fun, why yes, good to really sight in, not really, still had a great time.
Like I said try taping a small stick (colored tooth pick) on and shoot then cut off the top till you are close to the spot you want, this will give you an idea of where the top of the sight should be then weld something on or create a new higher front sight.

Good Luck

No problem about the Moon..i've been called much worse!

Let me know what Robert has to say about it.

I suffer the same frustration you have about shooting high. Thought about sending the rifle back to WLA...but I worry about not getting it back for ages...or not at all :|

I have a WLA gun also shooting about 2 feet high. Did the RTG 1200 sight solve your problems with shooting high. Thanks keith375

Guess this is still an open item!

Thinking about getting the M3 site as well...as long as it is just a spring to pop in and out without any drilling or modifications...why not.
