Inner Shield
Sometime back we discussed different patterns of inner shields for the sled. I am still not clear on the differences nor markings that should be visible, however does anyone know in English the correct method of removal and/or insertion of the inner shield into/onto the sled?
Thanks.
Mark
Thanks.

Re: Inner Shield
To remove shield, first remove cotter pin from T bar. Remove T bar, then remove shield. Reverse to install.

Matt are you sure you are not British???? Your sense of humour leads me to believe you are
Ok so your instructions Are sound - but do not help. I am curious to find out the 'official/correct' method as I am struggling to release a shield. Rotation, gaps, twisting movements etc are not working but the Germans will have a correct process I am sure.
My challenge may be that the sides have perhaps become constricted but any advice most welcome.
Thanks

That is kind of like British Humor I guessMarkFinneran wrote:Matt are you sure you are not British???? Your sense of humour leads me to believe you are![]()

I did not really know what you were getting at. Mine goes in and out pretty easy. Sometimes I might need to twist and turn a bit but it never takes more than about 30 seconds... I think we need pictures. If its a repro shield, maybe it needs to be trimmed. I doubt the Germans ever wrote out an installation procedure on this one...
Maybe since it does not fit, you should just send it to me... more humor

Re: Inner Shield
Mine simply drops into place. Putting the pin in takes far longer than anything else. There is no tilting, leaning, or wiggling needed on either of my sleds.
Re: Inner Shield
After checking a number of the ones that I have on sleds, I find that they also drop in and and remove with a minimum of effor and manipulation. Post a pic?

Re: Inner Shield
Thanks for the comments. So 'drop-in' seems to be the method. Neither of these drop in and the plain one takes some serious manipulation to sit on the cross bar. Both I feel are 100% genuine although strangely 2 different designs. The plain one has good clear stamps/markings. Obviously inner shields would have been issued with its 'parent' sled and therefore fitting would generally not be an issue but I am suprised at the level of difficulty.

Re: Inner Shield
Both do look original. I have not seen an example like the bottom one before. Do not look repro through. On the top one the machined pieces riveted to the plate don't seem perfectly spaced? Or is it just a camara affect?MarkFinneran wrote:Thanks for the comments. So 'drop-in' seems to be the method. Maybe its your Sled? Have you tried on more than one Sled? My early sled seemed a little tighter fit on my plate...

Re: Inner Shield
Since this topic of May of this year I am still struggling to insert either inner shield. It may be that the wings of the actual sled have compressed the space available to simply drop in. So assuming it is an issue with the actual sled and not the shield I am interested in now defining a correct WWI period inner shield and pattern. If David is reading perhaps some comment please but yes both those 2 shields are original. Here are some images of other shields from other collections - just how many variations were there?

Re: Inner Shield
After all this time it is now confirmed that the 'plain' one is indeed post WWI inter war Reichswehr sled shield. Does anybody have any images of this fitted?
