I bought two Sleds! One has battle damage!

Post by IMBLITZVT »

Guys,

The Maxim deals have been coming out of the wood work lately! I can't keep up!

Anyway, Here are the two sleds I just bought. The first is a 1914 Sled with what looks like the original Gray paint. Note the brass range plate. Looks about as good as they come! The second is a bit rusty and missing the owl cap but otherwise complete. It has some serious battle damage! Also the paint that is there is camo like Davids MG08 sled. They came with this German foot locker! I don't know much about it and need info if anyone knows more. It also started my cannon collection with the part that holds down cannon pivot.

I have a bunch of other item in too, including rare LMG08/15 parts, MG08/15 and more... more threads to follow!

Thanks guys,

The Sled in good condition I just think needs a little work on the top strap. Otherwise there is nothing to restore.

As far as the camo sled, I do plan to leave it like that for the most part, The Gear housing and cradle have been repainted, so they will get stripped and we will see what is under that.

Is this a WWI German foot locker? Does it have any value? Any others around? I could not find any on websites?

You like them Mark? I told you, they were just nice enough had to keep both!

Anyone know anything about the regimental marking on the foot locker?

The foot locker looks like it belongs to a member of the Mountain Regiment 85 which was formed from the Infantry Regiment 85 in Oct 1940. The Mountain Regiment 85 was part of the 5th Mountain Division which I believe fought mostly in the Italian campaign and surrendered in Turin by the Americans toward the end of the war.

Haha... Lots of looking at woodwork... just hoping when something pops out of it, I am there to catch it! Sometimes you need a saw too!

From the lettering, I'd say it's from the 2nd war, the similar type items I've seen from WWI were not that type of stencil.

Congrats on a solid score, those sleds look great-original paint, no major rust or pitting; I can only defer to a quote from Eric Cartman, that is “hella-cool.” 8) :D

David, Very nice Sled! I see yours is prime which mine is not. Looks like they stopped priming between 1911 and 1914...

On the box, they Style seems to say that this foot locker is WWII. I was hoping someone knew what the JR85 was. I thought JR was only used in WWI? But I am probably totally wrong.

I think that you have to consider the G before the Jr - this would make sense as it would be the Gebirgs Jager Regiment 85 - I did a quick google and believe it was formed in 1941. HTH

That does make sense since it says that unit was made up mostly of Bavarians which matches the address. Also they fought in Italy and France so it would make sense that it got back to the US. I guess I was just confused on the marking of JR as I thought that was WWI. However with seeing Davids and that G in from of it, I agree WWII. Pretty cool and can't beat free! I wonder what kind of value it has...

Probably has to do with the maker. My 1915 sled has red primer under the paint, but the paint is a much darker gray green. Dont know if it is authentic, but if it is a repaint it is a very old repaint. It also has brass caps and a brass ranging plate. My 1916 sled has an aluminum tag and non brass caps on the boxes. It has been repainted though so I dont know about the primer color. It also has papercloth? covered knee pads. They look like canvas now but if you look in the creases and on the underside where it is torn its that red pink color. Go figure. I think during a war all bets are off as to when changes took place with an item that had more than a couple of contractors.
