Re: Japanese Type 1 (Type 98/MG-15 clone) reactivated
Lets keep it civil! This is as a mod-we don't want to stir up DI !
Now from just bil-without getting pissy at each other, each of you have made good points, and also pointed out things that need further research. But try to keep out the sarcasm, nasty remarks, etc. This is supposed to be fun.
And what doesn't kill you makes you stronger! ---bil

Like radiation poisoning from a spider, right spiderman?...hahaAnd what doesn't kill you makes you stronger!
No hard feelings, its just that I would be called out on making such outlandish remarks as the "accepted idea of the type 98"...haha
No matter, I think that you are right Bil. Its time we all grow up..haha..and not post videos from youtube with the intent to poke fun at people.( the obvious ground adapted type 98 posted by the man in texas). ..haha
I think its funny, this is a very lightheart discussion(note all the laughter).
Im having fun, and I hope I don't run anyone off.
Bil, anymore info on the type 98? or japanese bakelite turn up?
Re: Japanese Type 1 (Type 98/MG-15 clone) reactivated

Re: Japanese Type 1 (Type 98/MG-15 clone) reactivated
Thanks for your help Bil! By the way, if anyone has any ideas on where to get take down material for the type 92"woodpecker", mg 08/15, mg 08, vickers 11mm acmg, Soviet Rp46, french model 24 7.5mm, or the chicom type 56, please shoot me a personal message, or email me. im sure some of this has been covered in great detail on this forum already, especially the mg08 ,08/15, and mg 34, but the others probably havent been mentioned. I am working for the museum here until i start flight school and haven't dealt with many of these before. I know the type 92 needs a special tool to remove its barrel, do any of the others?
thanks guys,

Wellllllll......Bubba Naess could detail all of that for you in his sleep, under sedation, twice dead. He can probably even tell U where to get printed matter for them, too. Now then.....you know what to do. ;-)sbl11 wrote:By the way, if anyone has any ideas on where to get take down material for the type 92"woodpecker", mg 08/15, mg 08, vickers 11mm acmg, Soviet Rp46, french model 24 7.5mm, or the chicom type 56, please shoot me a personal message, or email me.
Seriously, there are only a few videos on YouTube that I have ever found related to MG-15's; there are the 3-4 vids from Texas Jim, my friend Eric's video of his German MG-15, and my own two videos of my Type 1..... of ANYTHING related to MG-15's being shot in civilian hands that I am aware of......and what is funny to me is that 2 of the 3 guns then are actually Jap guns in kraut drag. I think Eric's early early Heinrich Krieghoff gun is the only actual German gun shown on YouTube. There is a serious lack of 'Tube vids on these guns!!sbl11 wrote:..and not post videos from youtube with the intent to poke fun at people.( the obvious ground adapted type 98 posted by the man in texas). ..haha

I said some naughty word in excitement after the first time I shot mine, so that's why the video isn't posted...haha..you are right, next time I'm home, I'll get on that! Its hard to beat these dang guns. By far the best flexible gun the japanese put in their planes, aside maybe from the dual type 1.

An interesting report by the british in India describing a captured japanese fues that was intended for use in captured british aircraft bombs. The Japanese adapted itself is made of bakelite. Report is from 1945. Seems like to me they were using what ever they could to get the job done, and that bakelite was an integral part of this design.

Looks to me like the japanese used bakelite in odd places more than we thought. Check out this fuse plug at the bottom of the page. Note two very different in appearance for these knee motar rounds.

Re: Japanese Type 1 (Type 98/MG-15 clone) reactivated
I heard they used a type 98 with a bakelite reciever cover to kill Osama Bin Laden!!!!
Re: Japanese Type 1 (Type 98/MG-15 clone) reactivated
Here is a picture from Robert Mikesh's book "Japanese Aircraft Equipment 1940-1945". It shows a type 98 with a bakelite rear. Note*** the bakelite is broken just behind the safety ring.

Seth,
Having looked at the new pictures, I just can't see the cover in the scans. Can you blow up the picture and crop it just to the gun area?
Also that guy does not look Jap Military, Maybe not even Jap. More like filipino.

This is a big as i can get it.
I agree. He isn't japanese, pacific islander is probably right. I think this picture is from guam, but it could be in the philippines. He is probably someone the U.S. Technical Air Intelligence Unit hired because he spoke the language and was able to aid in location of crashes. The picture is a crashed Helen with type 98 still mounted in the beam position. It has the same bakelite and mount as the painted type 98.
Re: Japanese Type 1 (Type 98/MG-15 clone) reactivated
Well, if the Technical Air Intelligence Unit hired him, it wasn't because he was smart, or knew anything about the gun.....he's got the drum on backwards!! ;-)

Re: Japanese Type 1 (Type 98/MG-15 clone) reactivated
is it an mg15?
Re: Japanese Type 1 (Type 98/MG-15 clone) reactivated
Much better picture, yeah without the step in the cover, I would say its Bakelite.
You ask if its a MG15? No real way to tell for sure but is that a Jap aircraft? I thought you had IDed it?
