Re: mg 42 being born again
The one above looked like you did a re-weld receiver ?? Anyway how do you like the BRP Grip & what did you do for a safety ?
Re: mg 42 being born again
I got the rear reciver from brp years ago.It is off of a demilled. It cost 60.00 when they sold them. i will put pics of it here or try to any way.It does not have safety.it use the ar15 parts.Like i said before the rails have not been riveted in yet.Right now i got pop rivets in it just for test firing and still needs rachate plate put on it. this is not a finished gun.It is put together just enough to fire it.rocco1911 wrote:The one above looked like you did a re-weld receiver ?? I was wondering if ya used a safety on yours or not I still have to figure If I'm gonna use the push type original on one of them or not

Re: mg 42 being born again
Yea as far as this project goes iam going to cut up the middle section and do some thing totally diffrent.I just do not like the way it came out.In the first pics you can see were i cut those short pieces near the feed tray to fill in gaps.Well i just could not get them totally right. All the reciver pieces are german but they are diffrent sizes. It will work just fine like it is but i want it perfect. So in the near future iam going to buy some 4130 bar stock metal and have them pieces milled out to fit perfect and do some custom work to were it will be stronger than original. My only snag is that i do not know how iam going to get the D cuts to look like original.

Re: mg 42 being born again
Here is some more crazy thinking.I hear of brps recivers being kind of weak.On brps recivers i hear that around the cocking handle guide slots metal will strip off and bind up movement.I dont know if you can do this on brp recivers due to the fact i do not know the chemistry of there metal but on a german reciver if a person was to cut out all of the bump up metal that the cocking handle use to guild it self on and replace it with a 4040 milled out bar stock and have it sloted .The guild tab on the cocking handle would go deeper in to the slot and have more metal to secure its movement. In all you got two benifits when you do this. you will have a stronger reciver and the smoothest cocking movment on a mg42.Iam not going to that on this one being every thing worked out so well on the rear part but i really am going to do a custom ratchet plate milled out of 4340 tool steel and the way it will be done it will be about the best ratchet plate made.Input PLZ

Why build a better mouse trap if a Victor works just fine ? seems like alot of work but thats just me.
All my guns are re-welds of cut German/Yugo guns I have several M53 full leangth cut receivers to re-weld also and as for BRP usa made ones I have no Idea I have a bunch of the scrap BRP receiver sections I use for filler Or small Ratchet plate sections on my re-welds
The best thing I see right now is the IMA 3 cuts I have used them & with patience they weld right up Oh yea I made some copper & brass jigs to help speed up the prossess...

Your ratchet plate sounds good,I don't know exactly what those bumps are other than to look good. ---bil

Re: mg 42 being born again
The bumps are there because when they mill out the slots on sheet metal it gets thin and weak so when they put the bumps in it it kind of stretch the metal out so when they mill it out it ends up stronger and less metal is milled out.Just look at one real close and you will know what i am saying. Most of the time if look at the back of the bumps you can see the milling machine never touched the bumps in the slot.Yea that made sense.
