MG42 Armor Shield
MG42 Armor Shield
I know some of you like to see this kind of stuff. I was Utubing MG42 stuff and came across some original footage and caught a glimps of a 42 mounted behind an armor shield. Not a lot of detail, but thought it was cool nonetheless.

Re: MG42 Armor Shield
Forgot to mention that the shot of the mounted 42 is a little more than 1/2 to 2/3 the way through the footage.
bring your popcorn and enjoy.

Re: MG42 Armor Shield
This is the gun shield for the SDKFZ 250 or 251-most likely the 251.In the naration they mention 'dropping off the panzer grenadiers'.These shields were used with either the MG34 or MG 42.Thanks for the movies link! ---bil

Do a search for the SdKfz251 which is the halftrack....SdKfz
or 232 which are the scout car and 6 (or wheeler. I've seen pictures of that shield on all 3 of those vehicles. The 231 and 232 used them as a standard for the MG34 and MG42 I believe. The halftrack did not use them normally if I recall.

That's why I'm me, Bil. Simple solutions for such problems... (from a simple mind, I admit). Like using a simple screengrab and copy to a picture viewing program, a little cropping, save, post to MG42.us. Simple. See, I work at a Nuclear Power Plant. You can worry now.Bil wrote:Thanks,DA.I have no idea how to get a still picture off U-tube,although tnat is not my only challenge! ---bil

Re: MG42 Armor Shield
The 200 series scoutcar had the MG mounted inside the open-topped turret, with a slot to elevate the gun. There was a screen cover over the whole thing-anti-grenade.With the halftracks,it seems to be a hit or miss thing-many pics both with and without. It seems they were fitted a lot more as the war progressed. Most of the variants of the 251 didn't use them,as it interfered with the special equipment. ---bil

MG42 with a slab side charging handle: that's pretty cool to see.
Re: MG42 Armor Shield
!!! Didn't even notice-good eyes! I don't think I have seen one 'in action',the pics are usually training photos. ---bil

Re: MG42 Armor Shield
In the beginning of "A Bridge Too Far," a German column goes marching by and one guy is carrying a 42 with the slab handle. Not a slab handle, but if you also watch "The Heroes of Telemark," early in that movie is a zwillingssockel 42.

There is no shame in having an eye for detail, especially of cool stuff.
If Hollywood employed more consultants on stuff like this, us history buffs would not be able to laugh or devise clever drinking games at their screw-ups.
