My MG42 on its Lafette with accessories.
Hi,
First post and I'd thought I'd show you my '42 with all its bits & bobs. The MG42 was made by Gustloff Werke in 1944 (MU - correct?).
I Just learnt the other day that the optic was originally designed for the MG34 but are the Mgz34 and Mgz40 interchangeable between guns?

Yeah, man. That MGZ34 doesn't work with the 42, so I'll, uh, like take it off your hands or something for a nominal fee.
Who's paint did you use to restore the mount?
Is that an al-lu-min-e-um ammo can with a shiny inside lid?

MG,
The tripod was already painted when I got it, however I suspect Norwegian. The dealer told me that the optic did come from Norway.
Yes, the can is aluminium. Not got it to hand but from memory I think it is dated about '38 has the original grey paint and leather fittings.
Bil,
Please, go on. I posted a close up below and the barley corn is screwed on from the rear.

Could we have a pic of the builder marks and ser.#? There is another thread going on about that sight being the early one,and want to compare. That really is a sweet setup! ---bil

Re: My MG42 on its Lafette with accessories.
Interesting serial number. My MG-42 is also a 1944 dated dfb but does not have MG-42 engraved. I assume there was not a standard for these markings this late in the war?
Re: My MG42 on its Lafette with accessories.
mkV,
My rear rec.bit is marked as yours,no mg 42 designation, serial# 6032h,mu date, dfb production.Of note is the different subcontractor codes on the mu dfb receivers, arz and rea, mine is rea also.
My thought is, somewhere between"e" and "h" block the mg42 designation was dropped as a time saver or to confuse second owners,Allies, of the weapon. The conversion to letter codes for year of mfg. may also have been part of planned confusion,ie who made it? when? where? what is it? Seems a stretch today with all the info we have but in 1944/45?

Re: My MG42 on its Lafette with accessories.
My thoughts are it was just to eliminate a few steps in the process-in the beginning you would want factory workers and the troops to get used to what the new gun was caller, after a while it was not needed. If you wanted to confuse the enemy, make fake markings.[like the 'SS' ones! Lettering and numbers would be a control issue,if you got a bad batch, you would know who messed up,anso which ones to fix, like modern service bulletins.Just my opinion, based on serial # and production codes for autos I have researched. ---bil

The only thing that helps me maintain my slender grip on reality is the friendship I share with my collection of singing potatoes.

Hi Longhorn,
Yes, it was imported from the UK back in 2000 to Canada. A nice clean, original example.
I must clean it up and take to proper photos to share.

Thanks.
Unfortunately the '42 is now sold due to bloody Italian law.

What are the changes to the laws regarding these weapons? Why did they change? Did something happen in Italy?
