MG34-MG42: GERMAN UNIVERSAL MACHINEGUNS

Post by salt6 »

Picked this up at the last gun show. Seems to be very informative.

Review from the web:

MG34-MG42: German Universal Machineguns by Folke Myrvang

Deluxe First Edition, 2002
The author, a First Lieutenant in the Norwegian Home Guard, has produced this unique, in-depth study of the MG34 and MG42 (the German Universal Machineguns of World War II) by combining his military expertise with his experiences as an avid recreational machinegun shooter and collector. Taking their cue from the MG16, proposed during WWI as the first-ever Einheitsmaschinengewehr (universal machinegun), an audacious program was begun in secret in Germany in 1930 to develop one new weapon which would combine the advantages of the light machinegun and the heavy machinegun, and be capable of performing all the functions previously allotted to both. The book contains much profusely illustrated material on the historical development, fielding, tactical use of and modifications made to these remarkable guns and their myriad accessories and ancillaries, plus authoritative tips on Troubleshooting the MG42, and especially the MG34, today.

The Book

Post by Abwehr »

This is a must have book if you are interested in the MG34 or MG42. The description is fairly accurate as to what you will find in it. Buy the book, it is definetly worth having.

With that said, I have two problems with the book. There is not as much troubleshooting with the MG42 as I would like, but we do have the books from John Baum which helps with this subject. The second is there is NO INDEX! Unless you know where to look, it takes you forever to find anything. This is common with all "Collector Grade" books and irritates me to no end. Still a book with a wealth of information, Highly Recommended!!!!

I agree, the only way you'll ever be able to find anything in this book is after reading it cover to cover. Even then you'll missplace information. This book has given me 85% of what I know about the weapons. It is a great book...On the bad side it will cause you to spend more money on accesories you never knew about. Like a Deckungswinkelmesser (shakes fist at JBaum...damn you for making me buy this cool addition to my collection). I know of no other reference that is as detailed.

its heavy on the 34 with the 42 almost as filler . has tons of good anecdotal info and history but if your hoping to use just this book to figure out how to get your SA42 to work

Its amazing anything works right around here with a bunch of

I think the book I bought for the same price about K-98 (backbone of the whermacht) mausers is a hell of alot better, esp when it comes to details about the parts. I learned one hell of alot from that book.

Collector Grade Books

The books by Collector Grade are fantastic books loaded with information, BUT they are a bit pricy, and have NO INDEX! I can accept the cost, but not having the Index makes it tough to find information fast. For a while after I read the book, I can remember where to find info, but after several months I have to search, and search, and search to find the information I need. Still, I will buy their books!

I agree abwehr, I've been putting paper clips on hot pages that get me thinking.
Maybe they'll realize the need.

Well!!!!!!!!!!!!

I like the book. It's missing just enough information, that people have to buy my translated manuals.

Myrvang is working on another volume. When they sell out of the first volume, they may print another one. If I remember right, he said it was about post war variants.

And for my next performance, I'm doing an MG42 manual with exploded diagrams of every rivet, spring, nut, bolt, small part and big part, plus disassembly and whatever else I haven't gotten to yet. 90 pages or so. I have it over half done. It should be ready in about 10 days.

RE: deckungswinkelmesser..... I found another one if someone is in need Tee Hee (laughs at shaking fist).
