Whoops.

I know someone that told me about firing his mg34 from a lafette and there was a stoppage. He thought he cleared the weapon and then opened the top cover. He then removed the buttstock and main spring and worked on oiling the receiver or something. No top cover, mainspring, feedtray, buttstock. Then, while standing behind the gun on the lafette, he pushed the bolt forward by hand and, well, you can guess what happened. There was a round in the chamber and naturally it fired when the bolt went forward. With no buttstock, the bolt flew backwards and passed just below his vital man parts (remember, he was standing behind the lafette mounted gun) and stuck in a pile of dirt behind him.

Lucky for him he wasn't turned into a Newt by that little misshap.

When I was in the military I was a gunner on Mh53 PAVELOWS (AF helos). If we had a "hot" weapon (one we couldnt clear in flight) we would have to RTB to let the weapons shop guys take the weapon off the bird and clear it.
We were technically only supposed to tear it down so far in flight. We tore em down more usually because no one wanted to come back with a hot gun. But there are some that ya just cant get.
Anyway we RTB'd with a hot .50 cal on the ramp. No biggie happened before will happpen again. Well the weapons guys took the 50 off the bird laid it on the E13 (basically same mount as in the B17 kinda neet really) as they were trying to clear it with a minigun safing bar (there isnt much you cant do with one of those).
BANG!!!
The gun with the mount went backwards down the tarmac about 15 ft.
BTW the 50 cal rig is about 65-70lbs.
Those guys were so scared they looked white even through the NVG's.
Actually we were all like that come to think of it.
That type of firearm shooting when your not expecting it REALLY gets your attention.
Next time Ill tell yall about flying over afghanistan and having "cook-offs" over populated areas 8)

It's good to have you back in one piece! BTW,on the link site, there is another movie about the fighting for Libau and Riga.At 2.04,there is some good footage of the mg34 in action,at 6.50 there is a guy with the lafette folded, running by,and at the end there is a big row of captured Maxims[same Maxim footage as in the link movie] ---bil
