Our ordnance departmant could not even copy the MG 42 correctly without messing it up-- Yet these old disposable Mg 42 and Mg 3 guns are still in service after what 66 years?? Where have our ordnance guys gone wrong?? If it costs more it is better right?? The Not invented here syndrome really struck our ordnance corps in the 1950's !!

The US Ordninance Department made a mistake in one of the measurements on the MG-42 reciever and thus ended up with a nonfunctional prototype. THEIR MISTAKE was not going back and locating the erroneous measurement and trying to make a new prototype after making a correction. We would have had MG-42's or a reliable variant in Vietnam instead of the POS M-60. And why couldn't we adopt the easy barrel changeout arrangement? The stupid M-60 is a real pain to change barrels on!

It isn't ordnance guys. It's Saginaw Steering Gear Division of General Motors, according to George M. Chinn. It's a funny idea to contract Steering Gear as gun designers, though.
