MG42 Brass Catcher

I just got a post war MG42 brass catcher. I have not tried it out yet. Has anyone used one of these? Do they help keep the brass from getting mashed?

Brass is dented at the case mouth from hitting the trigger guard.

If stopping it from being dented is your goal, why don't you make a buffer as shown here:
