What is the going rate on an mg42/34 reweld?

Post by ncreptile »

What seems to be the going rate on the WORK to have an mg42 and an mg34 rewelded these days?(Not the parts kit, semi auto parts or anything. Question is if someone had everything needed but paying someone to weld together and work out any possible bugs).

Currently have an mg42 being rewelded, not concerned with the price as I was already given one and am ok with paying it since the fellow doing it knows his stuff.

However I am curious to know what others have paid here for an mg42 build or an mg34 build?

PLEASE if you reply, include $$$. I spent an hour last night looking through similar threads here and nobody gave a solid figure which is why im asking now :wnana:

I would say $500-$800 depending on their experience and if they are licensed properly.
Anyone can do it cheaper if they are not licensed so be cautious.

I paid $1350 plus parts, plus all of the semi parts. He took a 3 piece 1943 MG-42 receiver, rewelded it. Replaced the cut front bushing, installed all of the SA parts, got it functioning properly, blasted it all and parked it and then painted it so it looks origional. He then built a custom shipping box and send it back to me. Cheap at twice the price.

I like the shipping box above. Can I buy one? What paint was used in this restoration? Was it Duracoat.

For your information, my race car builder friend helped me tig weld my cut M53 receiver years ago for $96.43. Cheap considering it was his welding equipment and his supervision. Most of his time was setting up a jig to square everything up. The receiver came out at 37 5/8" long (measured today by using a crude tape measure) and perfectly straight.

FYI - I have a FFL 07/sot license and this helps with any legal issues. I use the serial number originally stamped on the receiver for my paperwork. I might be interested in learning how to convert this FA into SA in about 20 years or so. Just in case I give up my SOT license or want to sell it. It seems you guys have all the answers. I'm sure I better find SA parts now or later I'll have to fabricate them myself. Any suggestions?

usmc8488, and ncreptile,
I have read that Bob-Naess from Black-River-Militaria has done this work in the past......and we have had another MG42-Board member posting some photos and information about his SA42-Build by "Bob".

Bob has not advertised this service........so I would guess that the best way to find out would be to e-mail him.
His work looked very good......and if I remember correctly, the finish was not the easy "spray-on" type......but I'm not sure if he used a "Blueing-Tank", or "Parkerization" for the dark-finish on that SA42.
Costs (?).....might be broke down into groups or total-costs (?).....IE: Welding/SA42 machining.......outside-finish (?)........you'll have to ask.
