I'm going to put this on hold for a short while so I can devote time and $$$ to another project. I intend to get this back on the front burner soon!

The ideas are there, if you see something that fits the plan while working on other things, you might want to think about jumping back in.

Yes I will. This isn't in the "round file" by any means. :)

Well, I placed my order this morning for the "parts kit" and a bipod. Saved 100 bucks I guess. We'll see what else is needed after I receive my stuff.

All and all, thats probably about as good of a deal as any for a M53 kit on todays market. I think CF is offering free shipping on orders over $99 this weekend as well, so $499 shipped is decent. It's not like they are making more of these guns so they will only keep going up.

Who knows how many more kits are left, but I'm sure the well is running dry. All kits imported after the ban will have drilled barrels too BTW. We will never again see the kit prices from a few years ago, so it is what it is, if you now what I mean.

Kinda sucks the barrels are demilled in these kits, but live 8mm barrels can still be had (just don't get scalped on one). I'd post a WTB ad here if you want one.

For a post war setup, the .308 barrels are still very resonable IMO. The best source at this time that I know of for them is Numrich. http://www.gunpartscorp.com/Products/731630.htm. I've bought 4 barrels there and all were excellant Steyr barrels. Course to run .308 you'd want a conversion kit like RTG sells...you can get either the MG1 kit or MG3.

I have the 8mm setup, MG1 and MG3 and so far I like the MG3 best...my WLA M53 runs flawless in semi with the MG3 set up using DM6 links BTW.

In case you are not aware, RTG has a lot of parts including a rear sheet metal kit, demilled front section, and much more : http://www.robertrtg.com/mg.html

BRP is also a good source: http://www.brpguns.com/categories/Semi- ... Semi-Auto/

Last but not least, keep shooting has post war MG3 AA tripods still in stock for $175: http://www.keepshooting.com/german-mg42-aa-tripod.html. I like the post war MG3 lafette ground tripod, but the AA tripod is decent.

Me, I pretty much collect 'em all and thats the cool thing about these guns is you can swap themes/calibers really easy.

Again it all depends on what you are looking to build, be it a dummy gun, semi-auto war time 8mm or post war M53 or post war MG1/MG3. Cost and skill will all vary accordingly. Good luck and keep us posted.

Brian at brp is a great guy that has done a lot for the mg42 market and if the camming area on the parts kit that you bought is long enough then one of the brp rears can be used. If not there are ways around that. A lot of the rebuild stuff that rtg sells was made for or at brp and Brian, fyi

Hope that you get good parts and a long camming section.

Thanks! I have my fingers crossed. I hope I will have it by this time next week. I'm in Louisiana and it will ship from Kentucky via UPS so we will see. I know I will have some questions after it arrives!

After you get it take a pic or two of the back end of the barrel shroud and we can quickly help you go from there. Also look for German marks and WaAmps on the other parts, might be might not?
Good Luck

Here is one ready to go out the door. Don't look at the 6 wire wrap on the stock which normally states yugo, but. Whatever

I would hazard a guess that the grip panels are Yugo as well.

Sure looks good but awfully expensive. And it likely is not all German.

I bought a mostly complete reenacting dummy 42 (mostly MG53 parts, dummy welded receiver, and hollow pipe barrel) last year for $600. Narturally, I had to buy all the auxilliary parts to go with it. Then I bought a cut shroud off EBay and bought all the parts to weld up an MG3 like I'd qualified on with our sister battalion in the Budeswehr. That one, along with the tripod and accoutrements, has been out on loan to the Ft.Taber Military Museum for their Cold War exhibit. Now I've got another shroud that I plan to finish out as a stock MG53 to go with my Yugo Lafette and sight. If all you need it for is re-enactments, welding up an acceptably accurate receiver is not too hard. With a good MIG welder, even a hack like me can do it. When time and money permit, I plan to have one of the guns fitted with a gas simulator system. Enjoy your project. I'm sure glad I found that first gun when I did. The parts supply is certainly drying up.

I really look forward to receiving it and perusing all the parts. I'd like to fix it up as a semi-automatic but we'll see what's in the box, etc. Welding is something I have never attempted and wouldn't have a clue about.
