I really appreciate the help guys. I have my fingers crossed that, eventually and, I hope, sooner than later, I'll have a great looking semiautomatic M53. I should hear back from Brian soon on the email I sent (glad I didn't call him by the wrong name!).

Your for sale post has been removed. Well from your last post looks like your going to try to make a semi-auto and not a dummy. Way to go. Good Luck on the build. Also try to enjoy and learn as you build.
There should be a couple of builds on this site using Brian's parts. It's also going to take a while to get everything done and you might need to take a few breaks now and then but you can do it as they say.

Yes I will hang on to it for now and see about getting the needed parts from Brian. The BIG stumbling block is finding someone to do the needed welding. I sent him another email but it came back as undeliverable. Can you give me his complete email address? Thanks!

Review the stuff that he has posted on this page

Thanks. That step by step guide is really great to have. By the way, I may have a line on a gunsmith that could do the welding and assembly for me. We'll see.

You should buy a barrel or two. This is a good deal as far as I'm concerned.

http://mg42.us/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=12642

I'm thinking about getting a couple at that price. And I own several already. LOL

The other parts came with your parts kit. Barrels are a very important item at this time is you going to build a shooter. .308 is fine. The only other item that will need to be reworked is the feed tray. Or replaced. No major deal. Also if a 8mm barrel comes along later pick it up also. Good to be able to shoot either ammo. i.e. What ammo is on sale right now??

Also review and do as much as you can your self. It's going to be yours - therefore build and learn about it, use us as needed and farm out only as needed.
There are several other good builds on this website also. Look Learn

One thing I'm wondering about and haven't checked on is the cost of ammo. This gun uses 8mm but of course can be converted for any other, 7.9 etc. I hope to end up with a fully automatic gun but first things first.

Several things, 8mm is the normal term for 7.9mm. The normal two ammo's are 8mm and .308. A lot of folks reload their ammo, so think about that.

Also something that you said about ending up with a full auto is a problem. Normally if you want to build a full auto you have to have a class 7 sot license. Which is a builders permit with another special license that allows you to build full auto.

Owning a full auto is another matter. It's allowed. That said prices for a licensed mg42 full auto start about $15,000 and go up.

Well that's an eye opener. I'm going to have to make it a semi-auto then. No way I can afford $15K for a license. Horse s--t and gun smoke!

I decided that, since the cost of licensing a full-auto gun is so high, I will build it as a semi-auto. Now I have to find out for sure if the brp receiver or rear sheet metal set and the front bushing is compatible with my M53.

Your front barrel shroud pic showed that it will work with a brp rear receiver.

Again think about the getting the small front shroud piece from rtg as that one is a much easier fix doing it that way. Final product looks better also. If you get the front piece from Brian (brp) it will be harder to do, far harder.

To clear something up John -- if you want to build a full auto you can do it in a much cheaper way. First you get ready to open up a gun shop that will have regular hours open to the public. Class 7 ffl license about $300 or $400 for three years. Then apply for a sot license to add to the class 7 license $1,500 for three years. After you have the licenses you can build full auto stuff legally. Of course you can't keep anything after the licenses expire. You can renew them time after time of course.

Or if you want a full auto mg42 you would need to find one that was papered before the 1986 deadline. Normally $15,000 and up and up. Work out a payment setup with the seller then send in $200 with paper work to the BATF wait several months then after paperwork is done you can pick up the mg42 from the seller.

Or you can build in full auto get caught and get 5 years free room and board and up $25,000 in fines, etc., etc. Bad way to do things.

Or build in semi auto like most of us do. Full Auto eats way to much ammo anyway. LOL

Thanks 42 rocker. I'll get the front bushing for the flash hider to screw on to from RTG, as you recommend. Then the receiver from Brian at brp. Opening a shop and all that isn't an option right now but I will keep it in mind for possible future reference. By the way, and this may have been answered previously, if I have it fixed up as semi-auto does the person doing the welding have to have a gunsmiths license, etc. ?
Thanks in advance!

PS Is this the one you recommend?

Yes that's the one. Same one I posted about on page 5 of this thread.
Also I think that I just read that you are going to do ""your"" own welding. If you are building a semi auto weapon on your own then you normally do not need a license. There are a few rules that go with this of course. Building for yourself and not planning to resell and staying in the rules/laws. If you want more info on this stuff pm me and we can go from there.

I believe that a rtg front end was used on this build.

Another step done.

Try to enjoy and learn as you do the build.
