ASSAULT BUTT STOCK?

got this buttstock today, thought it was odd witht he swivel on top, was told it is a rare assault sling mount? any thoughts, i would like a pick of how this is used with a sling

The original sling itself is not used on it; actually the sling used on this Mg 42 was the double snap ammo can sling from what I have been told

Actually, it is used with a sling in the assualt carry position. I have a receiver with a matching sling swivel just forward of the rear sight. I've been looking for a stock to match...want to sell it???

These items are "one-ofs" that were locally produced. I have not seen everything made to date for the MG42.......but as there are no WWII photos that I have see, I would ask the other forum members what their opinion is of this item. I doubt that it is WWII German.....but?

Last, What was the rest of the Parts-Kit?....markings, etc.....and where did the parts-kit come from? (who did you purchase it from?.....or was just the butt-stock purchased?)

I called my friend again today and asked about this buttstock and he told me he had seen these before years ago, like the early 1970's-- I know I will get FLAK on this but he had at least 10 of these great 42's all with 1968 papers and they were worth in the range of $900.00 in those days. I have been after hime to sell me his dewat collection that was promised to me years ago so I can't reveal his name-- A lot of my info comes from him so please give me a break !!

i got it in a mismatch kit and may be workin to buy thr rest of the swivels from the seller, i would like a pic of the swivel behind the front site

also i degreased it and can find no markings, downside is i had to break off the front of the stock to get this off, no big deal since the stock was trash anyhow, next time i get home i need to see if this will slide onto wood or bakelite without hurtin the stock

bw, that pic just looks like a k98 sling swivel welded to a washer?

Both sling mount and "swivel" are 6mm wire. The shadow makes it look flat.


Myrvang Universal MG book page 130 2nd to last pharagraph talks about Waffenmeister mods to buttstocks. Sheet copper, steel wire, and iron bands were common and became production mods late war...

Dan with Angola is very knowledgeable about these stocks and says he's seen several. Be nice if he'd join this discussion.

My receiver is WWII and both upper and lower look original in the amount of wear, type of wire/steel and tool marks in the bends...

I have seen/handled/have dozens of these stocks in the last three years. From my understanding, these were approved modifications by the waffenmiester during WWII through the bulletin the the government published.
I have only seen these on WWII stocks (no post-war), both wood and bakelite,most in very poor condition due to age/use. The forward sling mount on the bbl jacket of the receiver was fairly common also. Oldiron's note on the slings used is correct according to my info. Tom's stock was from me. I gave Folke two examples to include in a second edition of his book if he decides to update/publish. This is just my opinion, not based on hard evidence, on 500+ guns.

so bw do both the front upper swivels you have look the same on both recievers?

Every one is slightly different, most front mounts are simple rings, a few (early '43 dated) are similar to the rear ones.

Yes, one receiver is a Maget (cra) 1943, and the other is a Gustloff-Werke Suhl (dfb) 1943 date code (F.G) receiver.

Also...I remember a post that Jbaum was talking about split slings for assualt carry around the neck...He may know EXACTLY what manual covers the slings and he may even provide us with a photo or two of the slings and swivels in position on the gun ...
