M53 Safety?

Post by 60CPT »

Hi all,

I'm new here, but have been reading the boards for some time. I have an M53 kit that I picked up several years ago. I'm just now getting around to cleaning it up, as it will be my next project. This will be my first attempt at a M53/42 build. I have built Fal's and AK's in the past.

There are a couple of questions I need help with:

1) How is the safety on the grip stick supposed to work? I'm just curious, but while I was cleaning the grip up, I noticed that the safety is protruding out the right side of the grip with what looks like an "O" on the safety button. The problem is, no matter what I do, I can't seem to push the safety over to the left. It seems stuck. How are these things supposed to work?

2) It appears my kit is missing the front sight spring and detent. Is there a source for these?

3) My bolt does not have the anti-bounce spring in it. Does that matter at all? Do I even need it for a semi?

4) My booster bearing on the shroud is cut bad. The cut starts right in front of the front sight housing, and there isn't enough left to use one of the wiselite repair bushings. What are my options?

Thanks for helping a new guy out.

Welcome to the site! :D
Not the correct words here, but at the front of the grip on top, flip the small stamped lever, should cause other part in rear to rise, safety should work.[My head is real foggy, too much allergy meds!]
#2 Try Brian at BRP,or look in the suppliers section, other dealers of parts.
#3 Not needed in semi conversion.
#4 No idea.
Good luck! ---bil

Hey 60,

Does your safety have an F/S or does it have a Y/O?

The safety is marked Y and O. I assume that is Yugo?

my 53 has Y/O instead of F/S.

I figure 'Y' means, 'Yeah, the safe is on'

And 'O' means if you pull the trigger and it shoots, the 'O' means, 'OH SH$T!!!'
